It's probably some kind of mechanical problem. Perhaps something bent out of place.
I have found a photo which is the underside of the model. You can compare it with yours and see if it looks the same. If it doesn't (assuming it is the same model) then you have found the problem.

Tonearm is misaligned. This usually happens when you've moved the unit, or something has fallen on the tonearm, causing it's bearing to be misaligned. This is not an easy fix, and you will more than likely have to take it to a service center to have it repaired and looked at. Good luck!

There should be a set screw that you can tighten in order to adjust the height return. If you do not have anything like this, perhaps your record is raised too much. How thick is your rubber mat? Do you have any other mats sitting on top of this?

First off, Congratulations on such a excellent deal! That's a $500.00 turntable. I know I own a pair and I've been a DJ for 18 years.
Second, the Technics 1200 does not have an auto return. You have to pick up the needle and bring it back manually.

This actually worked when I spun the record in reverse 6 times. By the 6 revolution the arm is already touching the record and the motor in motion: from there I let it go and it plays...and now is in manual mode. Meaning I am able to lift the tone arm and advance to where I'd like.
