Windows 98 does not support Plug n Play Devices. So you have to download appropriate drivers from Microsoft Website. Though Windows 98SE ( Windows 98 Second Edition ) thought to be support USB Mass Storage Drives fairly, these drivers are not pre-installed with OS. You have to download Service packs to install these drivers.
Since Windows 98 have TWO versions, we have to download corresponding service packs .
Installing Windows 98, is you need a start-up disk (floppy disk) first before you can use the Windows 98 cd. The start-up disk will perform the partitioning and formatting of the HD...doing this, you have to boot from floppy drive first---after partitioning and formatting, you have change again the boot sequence to boot from cd then you can start the installation of Windows 98.
I can not find a win 98 driver for your printer on the HP website. DO yu have the instalation disk that was writen for win 98? If not try installing the printer through the control panel.
