Why won't the answering machine, when set to 'answer on' not record a message?.It goes to voice mail. Is my machine defective?

Maybe the answering machine is set to pick up at say"5 rings" and the voice mail is set to pickup at "4 rings" . Change the voicemail setting to a higher setting than the answering machine. That may be the problem.

Answering machine does not work

Sounds like your settings changed. Refer to owners manual. Make sure your line is plugged in and the settings are set so the answering machine answers on a certain ring. Sometimes the answering machine may be fulkl and you need to delete messages to make room for more.

How to set the tax

First, to make sure it will work, your fax machine should be going directly to the phone jack, with the answering mach/phone (if any) going to the ext port in the back of the fax machine. That way, the fax machine can "eavesdrop" for any fax tones for every call. If you want to use the fax machine to work with an answering machine on the same line, make sure to set the answering machine to 2 rings lower than the fax machine. Let's say, you have the answering machine set to 4 rings, your fax machine then should have 6 rings. You can set the number of rings for your fax machine under "basic fax setup" of the "menu". Otherwise, you can set the fax machine to auto answer by pressing the auto answer button.

When the AT&T 1717 digital answering machine is powered off it will answer an incoming call after 10 rings, it will announce "machine is off" then beep twice, dial 0 to turn it on. The machine is now ready to answer calls. This 10 ring setting is factory set and cannot be modified. To set the number of rings to answer for normal operation press <SET UP> button and hold for 2 seconds, machine will announce current ring setting. Press and release <ANNC/SKIP> or <MEMO/REPEAT> until you hear the number of rings you want. Press and release <PLAY/STOP> to exit. The ring settings available are 2, 4, and toll saver. How do you set up the Fax to take incoming calls after an answering machine answers

You need to set the answer machine to one more ring before answering, so that it doesn't answer before the fax. If the fax is set for 3 rings, set the answer machine to 4 rings before answering.

Can I use as phone/answering machine and fax

no, this machine does not have a message center. the only way is to hook an actual answering machine up to the "ext" jack on your fax. set fax to answer on 1-2 rings, and set your answering machine to answer on at least 4 rings, and set your fax receive mode to "tad" which means telephone answering device.

I can't figure out how to set up my fax machine so it won't mess up my phone and answering machine either.

Telephone wire goes to fax, out to answer machine, Important to set fax on answer machine mode and set the ring count to pick up AFTER the telephone answer machine. Set fax ring count to 5 rings, and answering machine to 3 or 4. When some one calls answer machine or you pick up first, then if no one will leave a msg. fax tones are different than voice tones, they are called CNG tones. Most new fax machine will sense this and if a fax will go to fax only. Ring count is the key. Also you could set fax up for maual mode and would not jump to anser machine or fax till you want.....good luck

Fax answer machine

FAX RECEPTION THROUGH AN ANSWERING MACHINE:
This mode is recommended for a shared fax and telephone line.
To receive a fax if your All-In-One is connected to an answering machine:
On the control panel, press Fax.
Set the answering machine to answer incoming calls before the All-In-One does. For example, if you have set the answering machine to answer calls after 3 rings, set the All-In-One to answer calls after 5 rings.
To change this setting on the All-In-One:
Press Options until Number of rings appears.
Press the right arrow (+) until After 5 rings appears.
Press Select.
Make sure the Auto Answer light on the All-In-One is on. When a ring is detected, the answering machine picks up the call.
If a fax is detected, the All-In-One receives the fax, and disconnects the answering machine.
If a fax is not detected, the answering machine completes the call.
