My Jensen MCD 5110 Marine radio acts like the antenna is unplugged. I can't figure out how to remove the radio from it's sleeve to re-plug the antenna jack (if that is the problem)

I don't know much about marine radios. I am a ham radio operator, but they are much the same, if you do not hear any static (with squelch control turned down), then I suspect you are correct about the antenna. It could be the antenna itself, or the coax line to it, or the connection point at the radio or at the antenna. You're stuck without being able to remove it. If you do and find nothing at the radio, you'll need to check the connection at the antenna etc. Good luck.

W do I turn off squelch control on a digitech DC-1065 marine radio hand held 5 Watt

Hi David,

Before I try to give advice, I need more info.

I possess a Digitech DC1065 UHF 80 Channel CB hand held, so there seems to be some confusion here.

I live near Perth, Western Australia.

Firstly, How many channels does your radio have?

If the answer is 80, then what you have is a UHF CB, not a marine band radio.

Marine band is VHF with 87 Channels, in Australia that is, and the default channel is always 16.

Digitech are an Australian radio manufacturer, so you'll get great backup service.

If your radio is not defaulting to Ch16, then I am right about it being a UHF CB.

Therefore, it is useless for VHF anything, let alone Marine band.

I'm almost 100% sure this is a UHF CB in your possession.

Try this to prove me right please.

Reply to me with your Country and nearest city, I'll then be able to find a solution for you real quick, though I believe I already have.

Looking forward to your response.

Regards,
Peter

My radio will not transmitt but it receives just fine

Most problems with radios that receive but do not transmit are antenna or antenna wire/connector issues. It's easy to receive with a marginal antenna but transmitting requires a good working antenna. If you have a SWR meter or can get your hands on one, install it in line with the antenna and test for reflected power. Of course, make sure your TX light comes on when you depress the mic switch. If not, switch mic and try again.
Hope this is helpful! Reply if u can.

Is a Cobra HH 38 WX ST C compatible with VHS marine radios?? Can it be used from mobile unit in a vehicle to the stationary unit in the boat ??

  • Hi, I can help.
  • The Cobra HH 38WX ST is a hand held CB restricted to the normal 40 CB channels.
  • A VHS marine radio uses different frequencies and different antennas.
  • I would absolutely not hook one to the others antenna set up or you will fry that radio as the SWR would go through the roof immediately.
  • You can use that CB in the mobile and on a boat but they would need their own antenna setup.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

My uniden ltd 715 receives from my handheld but when I transmit to handheld it just buzzes.

Just to clarify something, you say that your hand-held VHF can receive a clear transmission from the Uniden, now which of the radios are buzzing, the Uniden or the HH?. If it's the hand-held buzzing try transmitting on the low watt on the Uniden, get some distance from the radio, because if the hand-held are to close to the on the Uniden on high watt you will get a buzzing, the signal are overpowering the receiver of the hand-held, try getting the minimum of 30 feet away. Good luck.

I have a one year old Raymarine 218 vhf which has been transmitting properly however the receiving has been spotty. I can sometimes only get about 1 mile reception. Lately even the one mile reception has a...

The main cause for lack of reception or transmit distance is the PL259 connector on the antenna coax that plugs into the back of the VHF. Check to make sure this connector is a high quality, marine grade connector. If it screws on and the coax shield is not soldered to the connector I recommend replacing the connector and soldering it. If the problem still exists I would try a different antenna to see if this is the problem. It is possible that the radio itself has a problem, but check these other issues first. Raymarine has a 3 year warranty on their VHFs so you could send it back for a no charge repair if the antenna doesn't solve your problem.

Good luck!

Standard Horizon HX 471. Antenna is to long to fit in Dive Canister. Can I removed antenna or replace with more flexable antenna?

Yes, as long as it is the right length and impedance, you can use a piece of wire! ... If you can get a smaller "antenna" and it fits, it will work fine. You could try disassembling the "Old" antenna, inside, you will find that a it can then be bent or such, use heat shrink to seal it, when modified.
