The laser head doesn't seem to be moving and won't

I had same problem with a sylvania portable DVD: no disc. After cleaning the laser didn't work, I took the unit apart, and found that there is a small gear that moves the laser back and forth across the disc.. The gear could easily be misaligned with a rough bump along the drive.. All I did was realign the gear to the center where the disc was. Inside, there was even a small lever to pull back on to do this.. I also noticed a small Ribbon cable connecting the laser to the main board. Again, seemed nimble. I detached the ribbon, cleaned the connectors with alcohol and reattached. Happy to say, it works perfectly now. :). Good luck.

try to open the dvd and clean the laser lens and try moving the laser lens part back and forth and try palying the dvd again

Try cleaning the laser lens with a Q-Tip and Rubbing Alcohol. You'll probably have to take the case off and then there's probably a cover over the Disk Player you need to take off to expose the laser lens. Here's a link explaining how to clean a laser lens:

If it still doesn't work then check to see if you can move the laser assembly back and forth on the metal rails. If it seems very difficult to move then you can put white lithium grease on the metal rails and on the plastic gears that move it back and forth.

Please try to put in an ordinary audio CD track and see if this is detected. If yes the optical is working, if not there is no laser scanning and the possibility of the head being faulty is high.
Now certain cleaner disks are not read and so will not be tracked. Hence the rejection but the best is for cleaning manually the laser head eye with a cotton bud very softly and without any pressing of the lens eye.
If there is still no result then watch the CD if it spins or tries to spin. If the head unit moves up or down to focus or in and out of the drive, if so the board seems to work correctly and the possibility of the optical head being the suspected fault is closer.

Could be dust on laser or track for the laser guide, as it moves back and forth, may also need lubrication....

There can be various reasons.1 is the region code correct?
There a selection of dvd`s which you can`t play,this is in the front of your manual.
Unfinalised discs won`t play etc

yes.its the problem of laser .it is called CCD lens that is the problem.it needs cleaning if dust is collected on the lens or replacement if the ccd is weak.so its just clicking and nor reading the discks.

its seems that DVD player can't read the DVD. Can be: 1. DVD Player eye is dirty 2. DVD format on unknown to DVD player There are kits that clean DVD player eye, I would try it first.
