You thread the machine up top as normal including threading the needle. Then, bring thread under foot through slot on the side of the foot and wrap once from back to front around the screw with rubber washer that holds on the presser foot. Insert your bobbin and close the slide plate almost all the way(leave it open by about 1/2 inch) so that the metal piece on the underside of the slide plate pushes down the metal pin in the bobbin. This will engage the bobbin for winding. Run machine via foot control until your thread is even with the outer black ring on the bobbin, do not overfill! Now cut the upper thread between presser foot and needle plate, your bobbin is wound. Change your upper thread or just start sewing.

Can't figure out how to fill the bobbin

hi Beverly.
you have not said what make and model.
but try this.
Always wind the bobbin before threading the machine and needle.
  1. Place spool of thread on spool pin.
  2. Slide spool pin holder/cap firmly over rim of spool to prevent thread from tangling.
  3. Push bobbin winder pin to far left if it is not already there.

Is this Model 4617 missing the bobbin threading mechanism?

Can't tell from the photo. Perhaps this will help:
Winding Singer Sewing Machine Bobbin

For ~$30, you can purchase a standalone bobbin winder from JoAnn's, Hancock's or even Amazon.com. It will allow you to wind your bobbins even if your machine is missing the appropriate parts. (Also saves wear and tear on your machine.)

I have a self winding bobbin on my singer model number 4663 and I don't know how to pick up my bobbin thread.

isn't this info in the manual? If you don't have one call singer and purchase one because it's not in the download area. And a search for the model 4663 brings up nothing.

I have the model at home. It is a hand-me -down. How do I thread the bobbin automatically ( as I am threading it manually).

Unfortunately there is no way to THREAD a bobbin automatically.
(If there was, that would save a lot of time and effort!) But you can automatically WIND
the bobbin using the presser foot. Here is a video that I think will be helpful to you
that details how to do this on most Singer machines:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlrTnW_FUqA

After you wind the bobbin, you will then put it in the bobbin case and thread as normal.

Please let me know if you found this helpful.

"Birdnesting" occurs when there is no tension on the needle thread to pull the bobbin thread. This is easily corrected by rethreading the machine, following the threading path carefully and making sure the thread is fully engaged in the tension mechanism.
