How to Repair a Small Engine Recoil Starter ... Would like to now use the pull cord on the mower but it won ...
Remove nuts mounting recoil assembly. Observe how rope is wound around pulley. Find end knot in pulley wheel. Cutoff end knot and remove old rope. Find end knot in handle, use needle nose pliers pull thru old rope. Rope is sold by the foot at mower repair shops. Replace rope as observed before removal. Cut to size after wrapping recoil assembly and attaching thru handle at proper length if at recoil assembly or on mower handle. Ensure good knot in hole of recoil assembly and handle.
Remove recoil assembly from top of engine. Observe recoil wheel and find knotted end of rope in wheel, Observe direction of rope wrapped around wheel, cut knot off wheel end of rope remove rope. Rope purchased by the foot at mower repair shop. Feed new rope end into hole in recoil wheel wrap around in correct direction, feed rope thru recoil cover, remove old rope from handle, feed new rope thru handle to proper length, Knot rope to stay in handle.
- Remove the recoil assembly. Depending on engine model you may have to remove the air shroud with the recoil. - Remove the broken rope assembly from the spool by lifting the knot out of the hole and cut off the knot. - Pull the remainder of the old rope out of the recoil spool - Take the remainder of rope out of the pull handle
On the new rope burn the ends with a match. With wet fingers pinch the ends of the rope while hot/melted until it is the same size as the rope. Form a point on the ends - Install the new rope in the handle by threading it into the handle and tie ONE small knot on the end. - Pull very hard on the rope until the new knot seats in the handle. Assemble handle. - PREWIND the spool in the recoil until it stops winding. I.e. max out spring tension but do not over wind it or you will break the spring. Make sure NOT to wind it in the wrong direction or you will break the spring - Back off the spool until the knot hole is aligned with the rope guide bushing on the outside of the recoil. - Either use a C-clamp or a 2nd person to hold the pre-wound spool in place. -Thread the new rope through the outer rope guide and into then through the knot hole in the spool. -Tie ONE small knot in the rope and pull it HARD back into the knot hole until the knot seats in the knot hole. -Release C-clamp or have 2nd person let go of the spool. The rope will rewind into the recoil assembly. -reinstall recoil/air shroud on the engine.
That should get you mowing again. Thanks for choosing FixYa, Kelly
The recoil spring has broken. These are available at any lawn mower parts supply store. The process of changing the spring is tedious but can be done by anyone with average mechanical ability. If you removed the recoil assy (and air shroud if it is riveted on) and took the assembly to a Lawn Mower Repair shop usually they will change out the spring while you wait. If you can't get the recoil assy off take the mower with you to the repair shop. Again most shops will fix it while you if wait but if they are very busy usually they are serviced within 24 hours.
If you do attempt this yourself check in the tips section of FixYa on how to change the recoil stater rope after replacement of the spring.
I highly recommend you replace the pull rope at the time of the recoil spring replacement.
One final note... there is a possibility that the pull rope spool has been damaged where the spring attaches.
The biggest thing you need is time. There are no special tools required but it sure helps of there are 2 people available to perform this task.
You will have to remove the recoil assy if it can be removed without the air shroud or the entire upper engine cover / air shroud with the recoil. This procedure should be performed by 2 people that are NOT distracted.
First you will have to have a replacement rope. Burn the end of the new rope your going to install into the spool and pinch it so that the end is smaller than the rope and pointed. Install the pull handle on the new rope and make sure there is a good single knot on the end of the rope that goes into the pull handle.
Next you will have to remove all pieces of the old starter rope.
Then you have to pre-wind the spring of the recoil so that if you were to allow it to turn, it would turn in a direction that would pull the starter rope onto the recoil spool.
NOTE: Once the pre-wind is done if anyone lets go of the spool it can DAMAGE the recoil spring!
When your prewinding... Turn the spool until snugs and does not want to move anymore. Then back off the spool until the rope KNOT hole is aligned with the recoil rope guide. Thread the new rope through recoil rope guide and into the KNOT hole in the spool. (Ice pick scribe jewlers screwdriver... will be required to pull the new rope up and out through the knot hole. Then TIE a KNOT in the bitter end of the rope and pull the knot into the knot hole on the spool. FINALLY have 2nd person release the spool and it will rewind onto the spool.
Are you sure you have the right length rope??? If you are sure the rope length is correct you may have wound the recoil spring too tight causing it to run out of travel. You want the recoil spring just tight enough to pull the rope all the way in. Wayne

-In bnjays case the rope was broken. Sometimes the rope retracks partially or slowly because the surface that the spring edges rub against when retracting the cord, are badly rusted. Disassemble and wire brush the rust off, or leave assembled and spray in thru holes in the pull start with WD40.Avoid getting WD40 on the rope.
