Toshiba 27"CZ27V51 when I first turn it on the red light will blink, but no picture/sound.

However, If I hit the top of the tv hard the picture/sound will return. Sometimes it'll come back on its own. This is not a consistent problem (but often). Sometimes turn tv on & works fine. The picture and sound are excellent except for the problem. Is there a fix for this? Could dust have gotten into the tv? I noticed when I moved it - there was lots of dust behind it.

Most likely the volume down button on the front of the TV or the switch that it activates is sticking. Should be an easy fix otherwise.

The set may have shorted the horizontal out put transistor since it kept coming on sometimes. This could be cause by the driver transformer arcing causing a "spike" in voltage going to you horizoltal out put transistor. Stargazer

SOURCE: JVC 27" CRT TV AV-27BP3 display shows single horizontal line

I have a similar problem on my CRT computer monitor (AcerView 76c). It is an old screen and I think it is just at the end of its life, much like your TV. Having some background in physics, I would be pretty sure that the problem is with the cathode ray tube's vertical deflection system. The horizontal deflection electrodes are working while the vertical one is not. This results in a display of a single horizontal line (or in my case, a few superimposed) in the centre of the screen. Where both X and Y (horizontal and vertical) deflectors fail then the electron gun firing would result in a single bright spot in the dead-centre of the screen.

So really, we have no choice but to move on and buy a new set as repair is probably just as, if not more, expensive than replacement with a new device. Seeing as your post was in 2007, I hope you managed to solve the problem.

Best wishes,
SZ (Sydney, AUS)

I am not getting any picture or sound

In other words, your TV is in dead condition now. You must start troubleshooting from its main power supply regulator section itself. If you have sound knowledge in electronics, inform me. Without knowledge and experience, it will be fatal to try to repair main power supply section circuits, since, most of the components on this section will he [Hot] during power On. Without applying main power, it is impossible to go forward too.

Toshiba TV model CZ27V51 - Picture+Audo Off, Red light flashing

If you can make the set act up by flexing the board, it certainly sounds like a bad connection. I worked on this specific set before and am well aware of some problems with it. You say you could not find any bad connections.... but do you know HOW to locate them ? Some joints can look perfectly normal to someone who is not experienced but be in fact a bad joint. I don't know how this works...but for a small cash fee arranged through this site, I can give you more specific information on what to look for.
