I have an IBM Thinkpad 380D with a Pentium processor at 152MHz, a 6GB hard drive, and 80MB of RAM. I currently have Windows Me installed, but I'm constantly running into RunDLL32 and Kernel32 crashes and lots of BSODs. It's reached the point where I want to switch to another OS, but I can find very few that would work with my current hardware configuration. What would be the best OS I could use?
>>Just a note: If you're going to suggest I upgrade my laptop, I really can't upgrade it further. I've already tried to upgrade it, with no luck.<<
There is no modern OS that will run on hardware this old. You could put an older version of Linux on it but your software choices would still be restricted to much older versions.
Even a modern netbook will outperform your ancient laptop. Either reinstall the OS you have or get rid of the computer.

Hi there, You need to make sure your laptop meet the minimum hardware requirements for windows XP . (see below) I believe your system has a Pentium MMX 166 MHZ processor which will not be able to run XP properly. But that's not all, You also need to make sure IBM Lenovo provides drivers for all the hardware on your 380ED, which I don't believe it does.
Minimum hardware requirements
Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution
Hello You have to refer it to the motherboard's manual, to get information about how much RAM can it accept, and type of RAM. http://www.dataentryjobs.us/67948.html
All versions of windows except Vista and Windows 7.
You may find it difficult to purchase Windows version up and including XP.
You may need to install more RAM and a a 6 to 10 Gb hard drive.
The smallest hard drive available is approx 100Gb but the BIOS in the Thinkpad won't support a hard drive this large.
Current processor should be a Pentium III 450 MHz. As far as I know, the standard RAM os 64 MB and maximum RAM is 512 MB. Even a memory upgrade will cost you around 80$.
I would honestly suggest to forget a processor upgrade because it will cost you a lot of money. Probably more than a new laptop. Sorry...
Max CPU for IBM T20, 21, 22 is Pentium III FCPGA2 1000MHz (1GHz). Max memory is 512MB (2 x 256MB PC100/100MHz). Max hard disc is 250GB ATA. Newest BIOS is from April 2004 at the homepage Lenovo.
The Error 0270 means you must replace the lithium coin cell battery. Google "Thinkpad (your model) support" and read the manuals for instructions.
With a new battery installed, boot into Setup by pressing the F! key. Reset the clock and verify that the hard drive is recognised.
Reboot, all might be OK. If not, download and run IBM's free PC-Doctor utility to test the machine. If all is OK, I suspect the hard drive was stripped and an operating system must be installed. Verify this with a DOS boot floppy. Run FDISK to view your partitions.
