I had a similar problem that started last week. I did download an owners manual for my model and it told me to turn off the nuvi, disconnect it from the power source. Then press and hold the power button on top for about 1 minute until the calibration screen comes on, then follow directions. My problem it that it goes into the "pre-boot mode" and I never get a calibration screen, but after leaving it off for a while it will reset itself but then I still have the problem later. I will need to get it fixed somewhere, but this may be a temporary solution for you for now.
If you keep holding the button down it will go past the pre-boot mode and you'll eventually come to the calibration screen. Please see this link for more info:

I had the same problem and the Garmin 680 gps is very finicky. One time I got it to recalibrate by removing the gupdate.gcd file, and another time I had to reinstall the system software for it to recalibrate. The non-responsive screen problem would come and go, but eventually my touchscreen completely failed and Garmin said I could get a rebuilt unit for $79. No thanks, I'll shop for a new one.
Sharc has a very informative site. Apparently I got a lemon from Garmin.
I did that but the calibration took forever. It did not seem to fix the problem.

May be of some use. My unit got a bit warm in the car during a hot summer's day and lost calibration. I cooled it down in the fridge and then re-calibrated using your instructions above. So far so good. Hope this helps.
I discovered that the internal connection joint to the screen had come loose. Took the unit apart (with care and a star screwdriver), reseated the cable and put the unit back together. Went through the standard reboot cycle by holding the on button down to recalibrate.
Since then it has worked a treat.
When you reseated the cable you reseated that where it connects to the circuit board? Or where it connects to the digitizer side? I have the 205 version and it sounds like the same problem although I have already seated the side where it attaches to the circuit board many times.
