We haven't upgraded to the HD package from Dish Network yet. Would that also cause problems? I know using the TV remote does not offer the correct size. Thank you for your help.

You need to call DishNetwork and program the remote. The remote does not know your TV code. Easy fix.
SOURCE: DP46849 has black screen with power light on.
It may be in safety shut down mode due to shorted circuits or power supply failure due to such thing as bad DC filter caps. You will need to do in-depth troubleshooting.
