I am assuming you mean the built in microphone on the phone. (Not a Bluetooth device) . make sure MUTE is not on during the call. If this is not the issue the next thing to try would be a factory data reset. After a factory reset, if the device Mic is still not active, then you will need to use insurance for a New phone, or replace the microphone yourself (my preferred method as a Mic will only run you 3-10$ ... 10 being extreme)I am assuming you mean the built in microphone on the phone. YOU may or may not have a problem at your end--I would first try Skype with another person or two so you can see if issue is at your end--could be also Skype did not install correctly or if your microphone is not working from a missing driver or such.
Their microphone is probably not working. If they can verify their microphone works by using audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) then the problem will be on your end. Make sure your sound is not muted and that you have the right sound output device selected.
Make sure that the phone isn't muted. There should be a button that looks like a microphone. If it's gray then the phone is muted. If it isn't, try using the camera or something to make sure your phone's microphone isn't broken.
The problem is on their end. They need to turn on their sound/speakers. You don't need headphones for them to hear you. You need a microphone if your pc does not have one integrated. I still think the problem is not on you end.
