Utilitech 1/2 HP Convertible Jet Pump 1/2C-JET Logo

I just purchased a utlitech 1/2 hp convertible jet pump. When I turn it on it just hums.

I have it set to 115 v and have checked the voltage going to the pump and it is correct. This is the second one doing it. I bought one yesterday that did it. I returned it today for a new one and it is doing it. Does the capacitor have to charge before the pump will run?

The hum is the sound created by a motor when it cannot start either because the load is excessive and it cannot do the job or if the start capacitor is bogus.

If cap is good, motor should start immediately upon turn on. Measure cap with cap meter or simply replace it. The capacitance should be the amount indicated on the cap and not more than 10 percent less.

If capacitor is good the pump itself might be frozen. Try running the motor not connected to the pump.

I woke up to no water my pump kicks on and hums for 3 to 5 seconds and quits

It sounds like it is seized with the overload relay cycling it to save the motor. It needs to be dismantled, cleaned and possibly rebuilt. Check the price of a new one it may be cheaper.

Hi Eglenni,

Here are the specs for your pump:

Thermoplastic Shallow Well Jet Pump 3/4 HP. This new revision of an "old hand" provides good pressure pumping from wells where the depth-to-water is 25' or less.

BODY CONSTRUCTION: Thermoplastic
HORSEPOWER: 3/4
MAXIMUM CAPACITY: 12 GPM
FLOW at 10' LIFT and 40 PSI: 9.7 GPM
MAX LIFT: 25'
MAXIMUM PRESSURE: 78 psi
PRESSURE SWITCH SETTING: 30/50
SUCTION PIPE SIZE: 1-1/4" NPT
DISCHARGE PIPE SIZE: 1" NPT
AMP DRAW (full load): 6.1 amps on 230v / 12.2 amps on 115v
VOLTAGE: 230v / 115v, 60 Hz
RECOMMENDED BREAKER: 15 amp on 230v / 20 amp on 115v
MAXIMUM WATER TEMPERATURE: 140 °F (60 °C)
=========================================
Note that this pump can be operated at 115 volts or 230 volts (A/C) It may have come wired for 230 volt use from the vendor.

Make sure the pump is piped correctly.

There should be a wiring diagram either on the pump or in the literature so you can check to see how the pump is wired.

MAKE SURE
you have the pump wired for 115 volt use in your case. Also make sure the wire size is #12 awg for the power wiring.
Make sure all connections are tight. If you have an amprobe (an instrument that measures electric current) you can check to see how many amps the pump is pulling when it runs.

You said your old pump was 1 HP. This Flotec pump is 3/4 horse so there could be some pump performance loss depending on the well depth and length of the piping runs.

Here's the link to the website for the pump. There are additional resources available on the website:

How do I set the Waterway Champion Pump for 115 Volts? I have the same problem, just installed and it runs for a bit then shuts off. It was mentioned that the pump is usually set for 230, so how do I set...

The voltage is not optional. What voltage are you plugging the pump into?
If you are plugging it into 115, the pump must be set for 115.
If you are plugging it into 230, the pump must be set for 230.
Usually there is a wiring diagram on the label on the pump body or if you remove the end cover, there may be instructions there. There may even be a switch or terminal that states 115 volts and another that states 230 volts.

I installed new Hayward 6060 booster pump with 115 supplied voltage. When turning on the pump it hums. Is there something else needede to switch from 230 to 115 besides switching the arrowed...

What do you mean "...not go on properly..."? When moving from the 230 to the 115 both terminals inside the plastic selector device should then be on a spade connector on the motor terminal board. Is one of the posts bent? Without the proper connection of the 2 posts the unit will not run. I hope it is a simple as that.

If not your next step should be to contact the store it was purchased from or Hayward's chain of service centers to get it remedied. You can find a service center on Hayward's site here. Enter your zip code and further down the page select service from the list of choices.

1.5 hp waterway champion pool pump issue

Be sure you have connected the motor to the line leads correctly and that the motor is set for the proper line voltage.

A somewhat common problem is that most motors are dual voltage (can be ran on 115 or 230 volt) and come factory set for 230 volts. If you connect it to a 115 volt circuit it will run for a while and then overheat and shut off.

Trying to install Flotec Dual Voltage pool pump. Instructions have an addendum which instructs how to turn dial to change between 115 and 230 but does NOT show me where wires go. Refers back to owners...

The motor should have a diagram on it showing where line 1 & 2 go. It does not matter which of your two line wire goes to which post, as long as you put one wire per post and have the motor set for the correct incoming voltage, you'll be fine.
