SOURCE: camera screen said SD card is locked when I installed an SD card
#1) On my camera if there was a picture that got stored in the internal memory it would not reconize the sd card nor store the pictures on the sd card. I would have to take the sd card out and delete the pictures in the internal memory and then reinsert the sd card.
#2) Some how or other the files that were on the sd card would get scrambled on the sd card when I would try to erase them. I would have to reformat the sd card back to a "fat" format before it would work again.

An 8GB SD card will actually be a SDHC card, the HC means High Capacity. Your camera is only designed for regular SD cards up to a maximum capacity of 2GB; it's incompatible with SDHC at the basic hardware level and so cannot format the card.
You only have one solution: fit an SD card which does not exceed 2GB. Note that the specification for regular SD cards goes up to 4GB, but very few standard SD devices were ever designed or tested for compatibility with them. The few regular SD cameras which can use them mostly can only do so after a firmware update and even then will operate very slowly compared to when using a 2GB card. There has never been a firmware update to enable your camera to use 4GB SD cards.

check small switch on side of SD card; should be pushed toward contacts.Using the USB cable provided with cam, PC SHOULD RECOGNIZE DEVICE...might have to go thru windows explorer to find it, then use windows media player, or other, to open.
You are running 98 or later, right?

The lock switch on the SD card looks like a bit of plastic without any electronics. A bit like the write-protect tab on a 3.5" FDD.
So there must be a sensor in the reader / camera which detects the position of the switch. Maybe there is dirt in the sensor. The best way to check would be to try another SD card, but you could try blowing out any possible dirt and see if that fixes the problem. Can the camera write to the SD card?
Try moving the switch to lock and unlock status.
