Tom, see pages 23 and 24 from the link below. I have the same tractor but with the 22hp engine. It is much easier to remove the mower deck to replace the drive belt. Make sure your brake is set as this relieves tension on the drivebelt system. Good luck.

I need a belt diagram for a Mercury Grand Marquis 4.6L V8 engine 2006

SECTION 303-05: Accessory Drive 2006 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Workshop Manual DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Procedure revision date: 03/18/2008 Accessory Drive adobe.gif Printable View (104 KB) The accessory drive system:
  • has a single serpentine accessory drive belt with 6 ribs.
  • has an idler pulley.
  • has an automatic drive belt tensioner.
  • is not adjustable.
The accessory drive system provides power to operate components which power other systems. These could include components such as the generator, power steering pump and A/C compressor. Each of these components is equipped with a pulley which is driven by the accessory drive belt. The accessory drive belt is driven by the engine crankshaft pulley. One or more idler pulleys may be provided to facilitate belt routing and alignment. The automatic belt tensioner maintains correct belt tension and compensates for component wear and changes in system load. System load changes can be caused by the A/C compressor clutch engaging or disengaging, or demand changes on other systems powered by the accessory drive belt. To maintain correct operation of this system, it is critical that the correct length drive belt be installed. The pulleys must also be correctly aligned and kept clean.

Automatic tensioners are calibrated to provide the correct amount of tension to the belt for a given accessory drive system. Unless a spring or damping band within the tensioner assembly breaks, or some other mechanical part of the tensioner fails, there is no need to check the tensioner for correct tension.

My daughter has a 2004 Kia Optima with 82k miles. I don't believe the drive belt has ever been replaced. Is it overdue?

Are you talking about the accessory drive belt or the ignition timing belt?

In any event, if you're confident it is the original, then by all means replace it.

My point in asking about which belt has to do with difficulty of repair. You should be able to replace the accessory drive belt yourself, but you should consider having a mechanic do the ignition timing belt.

Good luck

Drive Belt broke on my 2005 1200XLC Sportster

A Sportster is not too difficult to change. You will have to remove the rear wheel, the right shock absorber and the front drive sprocket cover to change the belt. I think you can get the belt on without pulling the front drive sprocket. I always pull it but I don't think it's really necessary. You can work the belt over the edge of the sprocket.

When you put the new belt on, put the right leg of the swingarm through the belt so that when you get the belt over the front drive sprocket, the other end of the belt is INSIDE the swingarm. Take care and do not bend the belt into a radius smaller than about 4". Bending it any smaller than that will break the fibers in the belt and shorten the life. They ain't cheap either. There should be a note in the box about this. If you must take the front drive pulley off, an air wrench will usually do the trick.

The BIG TWINS are the ones that are a real PITA.

Good Luck

Loose sanding belt

Hi, Consult your user manual for the instructions to install a new belt.  Follow these instructions selectively to tighten the belt tension. Here they are....
CHANGING DRIVE BELT

Using a phillips head screwdriver, remove the two screws
in the center of the pulley cover.
  Remove the cover.
Raise sanding belt to the vertical sanding position.
Next, loosen the hex head set screw. Raising the motor
pulley releases the belt tension.
  Remove the old drive belt.
Fit the new drive belt on the drive pulley first and then on
the motor pulley.
Test belt tension by squeezing the belt with your fingers.
Adjust the belt tension with the hex head set screw until
there is about 1/4 in. (6 mm) of give.
Tighten the belt tension nut securely.
Note: Excessive tightness on the drive belt may cause
increased noise and overload the motor. Excessive
looseness on the drive belt may cause the drive belt to
fail prematurely and make a severe chattering noise.
Using a phillips head screwdriver, reinstall the pulley cover
and the two phillips head screws. Tighten securely.

Good Luck!  Middles
