There is a huge capacitor inside microwaves, and that description sounds like it is starting to fail. There are smaller capacitors as well. It won't be a door switch, they work or they don't.

There should be a sticker or plate mounted on the door jam of the unit that will say what the wattage is. if not, contact the manufacturer with the model number and they'll be able to tell you.
This is a serious problem. The microwave oven should not work with this safegard working properly as radiation can leak out. Please call a certified repairman to resolve this issue. As this can mean the replacement of the door or other expensive parts, please ask for an estimate over the phone as to the worse scenario so as to avoid sticker shock. On the other hand, as it was in our case, it could mean a simple door adjustment (our microwave is not a KitchenAid). Good luck.
the micro switch is probably faulty which tells the machine the door is actually closed or open. this would need replacing which means pulling the unit apart.

HI, this is an indication of a failed door switch. When the switch fails, the control cannot recognize the closed door signal. Simply replacing the door latch mechanism will solve this issue.
Remove the front panel by removing the screws located on the inside of the door (note hold door inplace, since it is heavy and will fall out after screws removed). Unscrew screws located on bottom of plastic retainer (2 each) Remove tension spring. Note 2 are included right and left. Note color of spring on end, different springs for different door types, stainless, black,beige or white. Replace all in reverse order.
