TV will work fine for brief periods and then picture fades to almost black and sound remains - any help appreciated
Back - light problem indeed. Check and replace damaged component/s at its back-light inverter board, or replace this board as card basis. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. It will be best to replace the inverter board as card basis.

Some model sets; especially LED back-lighted types; the back-light inverter circuit will be part of the main power supply board [SMPS]. In such cases, the power supply board might need replacement.

With most flat panel TVs, the TV turn itself OFF when it has a fail electronic part and the red light starts flashing. They call this "Protection Mode". The flashing red light should be a error trouble code.
But, it's weird that everything is working and the red light is flashing. Since you just recently bought the TV, I would get it check out while it's still under warranty. Better safe, than sorry.

There are two places to look for the problems, the backlight inverter board and the power supply. Look at the power supply first since it is easier to get to, look for burnt parts, bad capacitors, etc.

I think you have a defective power board. the pop sound in coming from the board and giving you a low output voltage. do it yourself price about two hundred for parts.
SOURCE: picture fades to black then reappears and repeats fades to black .
Maybe getting a solution to this problem doesn't matter to you any longer, but I purchased three of this same model at the same time and two of them have failed. One with picture and no sound; the other with sound and no picture. I'm just going to swap the components until I discover what the problem is. I'll post the results if I achieve success.
