Code 8: Controller problem. Also, check to see if your gearbox levers are engaged - if you can roll the chair by hand the gearbox is not engaging the motors.
With Golden Technologies chairs, there is a self diagnostic system. There are LED lights at the transformer and the hand control. If you do have have lights at the transformer, it may be a power issue or a bad transformer. If you have lights at the transformer but not the hand control, it is the hand control. Since you state you ahve lights on the hand control, it is probably a motor issue.
The best thing you can do is call the store which sold you the chair or call Golden directly at 1-800-624-6374. While they do not sell directly to the public, they can point you to a local dealer who can help with the repair.
Make sure that your tires are properly inflated and that you are not carrying more weight than the power chair will allow and that your batteries are fully charged. If you got your chair second hand, sometimes the previous owner has the technician change the controller settings to "dampen" it to slow it down to allow them greater response time and control. The technician can reprogram the controller to take it back to 100%. If you got the power chair new, it should be at 100% already. Take it easy, HotRod. It's a medical device, not a car! Good luck!
There is a series of diagnostic flash codes associated with the controller. The diagnosis depends on which color and how many lights are flashing. If you post the combination, I can help you. Or you can download the Basic Operation Instructions of the Pilot Controller from the Pride website. The codes are listed on page two on the troubleshooting instructions.
The clicking is the mechanical part of the switch, but the electrical part may still be bad. In all the chairs I have serviced, it has always been the switch. The switch itself goes for about $25 plus labor to change it, and the whole control unit retails for about $100. the best test is to take the controller apart and short out the center wire to either side and check the chair for movement.
