SOURCE: dryer was working and stopped
Your assumptions are probably correct. If the model number is correct, the belt tends to wrap around the motor shaft when it breaks on this model dryer. That may be the source of the burning rubber smell and the smoke.
In order to access the belt follow these steps:
1. UNPLUG the dryer.
2. Lift the top panel by removing the two screws under the lint screen door on the top panel. With the screws removed, the panel will lift up.
3. Disconnect the door switch connector. This should be a white plastic connector plug with two to three wires on it.
4. Remove the front panel by removing the panel screw that is located on each side inside the cabinet. With each screw removed, the front panel will lift up and out of the way.
You should now have full access to the drum interior.
If the belt broke, the idler pulley will come loose and will usually be found lying on the cabinet bottom. This is normal with no tension on the pulley to hold it in place. To re-install, follow these steps:
1. Loop the drive belt around the dryer drum with the groove side facing the drum. (Try to line the belt up with the wear marks already on the drum from the previous belt).
2. With the tensioner in your left hand, insert the clip end of the idler pulley into the grooves on the dryer bottom casing with the idler wheel pointing to your left. (The grooves are directly in front of the drive motor.)
3. While holding the tensioner in place, insert the belt UNDER the wheel with your right hand and pull it up and over the drive motor pulley.
If this does not explain it well enough, you can also verify by going to repairclinic.com. Click on the Repair Help link and look for the "Dryer Belt Diagrams" link under the Special Features section on the next page. Look for Whirlpool and refer to diagram H.
When reinstalling the front cabinet, make sure you insert the small cleats that are on the front edge of each side panel into the slots on the front panel. Hold the panel in place with your knee as you reinsert the screws that hold it in place on each side. Don't forget to reconnect the door switch!
If you still have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.
SOURCE: when the dryer is hot and you open the door it
Your dryer is getting to hot due to the cycling thermostat being bad. Also check you vent for clogs. If you don't replace the cycling thermostat your thermal fuse will end up going bad. Then your dryer will stop heating. You will find the cycling thermostat on the element shoot. It's round, has two screws and two wires going to it.

SOURCE: Loud banging sound when dryer is on much like when
Sound like either your belt or your bearings. Either way, I wouldn't run it anymore until I got a professional appliance repair guy out to check it. We wouldn't want your house to burn down. Very dangerous!! I would also unplug it until then as well. Good luck and stay safe!

it sounds like one of the coils on the heating element could be touching metal and grounding out constantly running until you shut it down manually, when the heater is on the timer doesn't move until the heat shuts off, then the timer advances, when the machine calls for heat again the timer stops and the heat comes back on,it does this until the timer reaches zero but in your case the heater isn't shutting down and is keeping the timer from advancing.the filter is on the top of your dryer so unplug it,pull it out remove the ventline from the back of the dryer and remove the back panel, you'll see the heating element on the right side, also with a meter check the thermostats on the heater box, when checking any part at least one wire has to be diconnected or you won't get a correct reading, check for continuity on all the parts on the heater box, when the dryer is running correctly say you have a blocked vent line, when the dryer starts running hotter than normal the thermal fuse or the high limit thermostat will pop,the thermal fuse is the white piece to the right of the lint filter duct and the hgh limit is the top thermostat on the heater box,but with the element grounding out nothing will shut it down until you manually cut the power by moving the timer to off,if it melted the baffle you could have damaged other parts like the motor, check the rear end of the drum and see if there's like yellow on it or lint stuck to it where it touches the back wall,if there is then the oil from the motor sprayed out and the motor could last for a week or 5 years but the overheating most likely damaged it,if the dryer is old you might want to think of buying a new dryer instead of repairing it and then you have problems with something else like the motor or changing out thermostats in a month or two but you have to make that call, good luck and let me know what you find
