I am trying to connect the 2 rear speakers of a 7.1 surround to zone 2. I am using v-aux/dock as zone 2. It plays for about 30 seconds and then powers off.

your set needs a tech due to excessive voltage the regulator got very hot causing it to damage when opperating systems a fan is needed to cool it off.goodluck.

SOURCE: Zone 2 problem

Your unit's internal breaker is tripping out. Hmmm...I think all of these high end Yamaha AVRs have a self diagnostic program. I have an earlier Yamaha model (1998) DSP-A1 and it does. You should be able to access the diagnostic readout by pushing the right buttons on the front panel. I have a service manual for my DSP-A1 and it shows how to do it for my unit. The diagnostic program stores in memory what fault caused the internal breaker to trip. I would suggest you get a copy of the service manual for the Z9. You can readily get one on the web from various suppliers for a small fee. My guess would be a high temperature trip as I have heard the z9s run very hot.

go into your amp settings menu then to speaker settings,set zone 2 on and main on, turn up the volume for zone 2 about half way then connect phono cables from zone 2 pre out to a input on the external amp (eg cd input )
never use the phono input this is for turntables,connect this amp to your speaker switch/selector then to speakers.

I know this is old and im sure you have it solved by now, but it might be a good idea to check the amp setting of Zone 2. Is it switched to Internal or external? I remember something strange about this amp in that when you change from using the rear surrounds and go to use them in Zone 2, it resets the amp setting or something like that. Hope it helps if you still need it.

Strange, if you hook the output from zone 1 to the speakers though it works, correct? You can always just have both sets of speakers connected to zone 1. It sounds like the zone 2 output may have some issues going on here. There shouldn't be anything prohibiting the other sources from playing over zone 2. Check the setup of the receiver and verify there is nothing that "disables" zone 2 for those sources, but to my knowledge (and looking at the manual here) there isn't anything like that.
