Lawnmower Makes Squealing Sound when Self-Propell is Used

I have a brand new troy built self-propelled lawn mower and it starts up fine... However, I prefer to use the self-propel to make it easier so I don't have to push too hard and for the last 2 times that I have since tried to use it my lawn mower then suddenly starts squealing so annoyingly that I can't stand it and don't want to use my lawnmower anymore... Any ideas what could be the problem? I was debating taking off the top and looking at the belt to check it but I'm not sure what would be a good place to start especially since it is a brand new 2 month old lawn mower that my mom got me as a housewarming gift...

Self propell will not go

Remove the cover from the self propel and check the engagement cable for excessive stretch.

Also check the drive belt for wear or breakage.

Self propelled #860. self propell got slower and slower. now barely assists. can I adjust the belt. manuual says bring it in. too far. how do I tighten? thx, bruce

Hello,

Your self propell is not adjustable. The belt runs over a spring tensioner, you either need a new belt or axle bushings. If you pull the top cover off, you can watch the belt when you engage it. With the engine off, can you move the front wheels up or down or forward or backward? If so the plastic bushings are worn out and this changes the geometry of the drive system, making the belt appear too long.

Hope this was helpfull, Matt

How do you remove the gears on a front wheel self propelled troy bilt push mower?

Take the front tires off, pull gears and take out pins, put tires back on and you have a "non-self propell" mower.

Troy bilt lawn mower. Will not engage self propell, front wheels

Hello:

Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine and the Mower Model Numbers, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Engine Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. The Mower Model Numbers are Usually Located Under the Seat on a Sticker on the Body of the Mower.
