The waste ink absorber pad under the ink head parking station is full of ink, or the printer assumes it is. Usually you have to disassemble a substantial portion of the printer to get it out. Often, you can wash out the pad with soap and water, rinse well, let it dry and put it back in. Most printers have some sort of reset procedure you need to follow to cancel the ink pad warning and get back to normal operation.
You might want to try just resetting your printer rather than changing the ink pad. The warning is based on a count of how much printing is done, not a measure of full the ink pad has become. Consequences of not changing the ink pad, if truly filled to capacity, could be ink leaking from the bottom of the printer.
The following video show how to perform a reset that should work for your printer. The second video will give you an appreciation for how to change an ink pad and help you to decise whether you wish to attempt.
Do you have a message on your screen ??? Try printing a document or opening the print manager and see the error message - that looks like a maintenance error when your pads need to be serviced after a set number of prints.
Press the button to set the carriage in ink change position - while your carriage is in the ink change position UNPLUG YOUR PRINTER.
ONce printer unplugged from electrical wall socket - remove all carts, and then place them back one by one making sure you use the right color for the right slot - make sure they snap in securely, close the latch.
Now plug in your printer and wait for the initialization process and see if this works....
If you still get the blinking lights, you will need to locate the error message - your printer pad counter has reached its maximum and it needs to be serviced and reset.
There are reset software out there, but you need to change the pads or divert the tube to a tank outside your printer.
The message refers to the ink pads, which are actually a number of porous pads in the printer that collect, distribute, and very importantly contain the ink that is not used on printed pages. Ink is collected by these pads during the initial setup of the product, during cleaning cycles and when printing borderless photographs. Most users will not receive this message before the printer is replaced for other reasons. Some high volume users or those who use the printer for many years may receive this message about ink pads before other components reach the end of their usable life. You can also reset the counters on the Epson to allow you to continue printing by downloading a service utility at the following link http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html
Well, at some point you will need to either replace or wash the absorber pads in the printer - but you can reset the warning as follows:
1) Turn the printer off
2) Press and hold the <resume>button
3) Press and hold the <power> button
4) While holding down <power> release <resume>
5) With the power button still held down, press <resume> twice more
6) Release the power button
7) Press and release the <resume> button 4 times
8) Press and release the <power> button twice
At this point, the printer should come back online with the waste ink warning reset
Personally, I would only do this once before actually changing the ink absorber pad...
Inkjet printers have a fibrous pad inside them that collects the waste
ink from cleaning the print head. Over time, this pad fills up with ink
and can no longer hold any more. When this occurs, the printer
indicates a "waste ink tank full" error.
The waste ink absorption pads are inside the printer, in the very bottom. They are usually soaked with ink when full and are very messy.
Replacing
the waste ink absorption pads is something an authorized canon service
facility can take care of for you.

Canon MP520
multifunctional device - deactivation of the ink level counter
1. You can do it only when the printer counter releases the warning message - "the ink
cartridge is nearly empty" = yellow
warning mark
2. You have to do this
procedure four times - for every cartridge one times 3. At the screen
you will see three warning messages - for the first one press
"OK" - for the second and third one press
"Yes" 4. The fourth
message tells you that you can do the ink level counter deactivation by
pressing the "Stop/Reset" button (7) for more than 5 seconds. Do it. Later you can see another
type of warning message at the screen:
In this case you
can not follow the previous procedure - there will not be any other warning
messages. Just follow the
message on the screen and press the "OK" button (5) and you can print. Unfortunately -I do
not know for how long time it works.
You have to manualy
check the ink level and refill (change) the cartridge before it is completely
empty! You might brake your warranty! When you insert the
new original ink cartridge, the counter will work properly again.
Ink pads on these are cheap to buy but are pain to get to, you would need to have it done for you, I charge 100 bucks a hour as do my peers, pads are abot 30 bucks for the seven of them, plus you have display fault to consider... Replace
