The idea behind the turbocharger is that exhaust gas goes past blades on one half and causes the turbo to spin. On the other side, blades spin that compress intake air and introduce it into the intake manifold at a higher pressure. Since the air is at a higher pressure, there is more of it, so there is more oxygen available to support combustion, so more fuel can be provided, which then creates more power.
The exhaust gas is HOT and if when an engine has been run hard, it is not uncommon for the turbo to be glowing red, especially in the dark. It's important to let the engine idle for a few minutes before shutting down in these circumstances so that the turbo can cool down.
As long as your engine is performing properly, there should not be a problem.
