Question about Epson WorkForce WF-3640 Wireless Color All-in-One Inkjet Printer

How to resolve error 0x97 on Epson WF-3640?

Printer is standalone (not connected to any network or computer). Copying starts; printers creates sounds like trying to unsuccessfully moving something; after some tries ejects paper (empty or with the first lines of copied text); printer displays error code 0x97 and requires power off - on (which does not have any effect on the ill behavior).

Have a look at the attached image and the actions it recommends (in the upper left corner). This image is the error message which pops up on the computer screen (if a computer is connected to the printer). With or without a computer connected an equivalent error message pops up on the printer display. I stress this point to avoid somebody relating the problem to the computer software - error 0x97 is a pure printer problem.

Meanwhile Epson support added a quite similar but more detailed recommendation (my translation from German might be imperfect):

    1. Check printer interior for jammed paper or debris; remove it
    2. Remove all printing cartridges
    3. Disconnect the power and the USB cables
    4. Only then press the power button as if you wanted to switch power on. Residual currents will discharge.
    5. Reconnect all cables an turn power on.
    6. If unsuccessful contact field service.

The booting phase will slightly differ dependent on whether you insert the cartridges before turning power on or after (then after a while you will be asked to insert the cartridges).

In principle, this recommendation does work - the error message disappears. However, it pops up again after a random period of time (half a day or so). So, the recommendation does not cure the problem it just hides it for a while. I consider contacting field service.

Does some of you have a better idea?

By someone else's suggestion on this website I downloaded & installed the new firmware software from the epson.com website. Worked like a charm. It was easy. Error message (0x97) is gone and printer is printing beautifully again.

12 Month on from Anonymous reply 22 May, a few days ago I started to receive error 0x97 on my 28 Month old Epsom WF 3640 printer, the best and most reliable printer I have owned until this incident. Previous life cycle for my printers prior to getting the WF 3640 (my first Epsom) had been around 15 months. I was a tad aghast when reading the message boards about this error and the remedial action suggestion if still no fix replacement would be required. I had installed a firmware update a few weeks ago and after trying the several suggested solution steps without success, I was starting to browse local suppliers for a replacement (Epsom of Course). Spotted this response and ran the SW Updater ‘Lol’ there was a firmware update which I installed I sent a print job from 4 computers incl. a Mac in my network and no error 0x97 smile back on the dial.
What is of concern is from message board evidence this error had been around for a few years what is Epsom doing about it?

First, here's a copy of the manual:
https://files.support.epson.com/docid/cpd4/cpd40083.pdf

Second, attempt the following which I copied this answer from another post concerning the same error code:
"The problem is waste ink around head sprayer (at (bottom plate of head). Turn of printer. Move head to center. Put wet tissue (with hot water) at head cleaning mechanic pad. Move head to parking position. wait till 10 minutes. check it. You can repeat 3 times." (Post by Anjazmoro Wicaksono)

If that does not work, are you able to open the printer and look for anything that may be blocking proper function?

@Jason: Thank you for your response.

    1. A manual always is a good idea. However, the link refers to model WF-4630 not my model WF-3640 (I do have the correct manual already)

    2. I have seen this recommendation regarding "waste ink around head sprayer". I can imagine what waste ink is, but I am not confident to understand what the head sprayer is. Combining "cleaning mechanic pad" and "parking position" I tried to apply this wet tissue trick as far as I understood it - without success, although cleaning quite some possibly waste ink. Who - apart from Anjazmoro Wicaksono - has >>successfully<< applied this wet tissue trick?

    Sorry about the manual :/

I know you may not be able to do this, but have you attempted to run the following:

    Printhead Nozzle Checkhttps://files.support.epson.com/docid/cp...

    Printhead Alignmenthttps://files.support.epson.com/docid/cp...

    Printhead Cleaninghttps://files.support.epson.com/docid/cp...

They may not be suitable for you if your printer is consistently powering off.

You may also attempt to reinstall the firmware, found on this page:http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Storesuppor...

If none of these options help, it may be best to contact Epson support (see image)

@Jason: thank you for all the comments so far. At the moment the printer is working again, after some repetitions of the power-off-trick Epson support told me (see comment to my first contribution). As said this trick is not a stable cure of the problem but a quick remedy to symptoms - after its first application the printer worked for 2 days, currently I am approaching 10 days. You will understand that currently I do not touch the printer.

BTW When trying to resolve the problem I of course tried print-head cleaning etc. - in particular with the wet tissue trick in mind. If I remember correctly those tasks worked which did not require paper. Starting a paper feed immediately resulted in interruption of the operation and error 0x97. If I remember correctly print-head cleaning does not require paper feed and does work. However, with the next action requiring paper error 0x97 came up again. (Just to mention that, even in error state scanning works perfectly well. I do not use fax.)

The error might originate from a hardware problem, I conclude from some other comment I have seen in the forum. It describes the method to enter maintenance mode of the printer and to reset a hardware error flag. An alternative to using maintenance mode is to deep discharge power supply causing the logic to forget about this flag. Deep discharge might have happened during application of the wet tissue trick as well - remember the long time suggested for its application. But this is my interpretation only.

I will return to this thread as soon as the problem turns up again. I am quite confident it will. Problem not resolved, just neutralised at the moment.

I bought my Epson WF4630 in the summer of 2016 and Epson replaced it under warranty in the first year due to streaking. I learned to turn it off when not in use, and that made the 2nd one last longer but I got this 0x97 error yesterday.

I called Epson to see what they said and after asking a few questions they volunteered to send me a refurbished printer free of charge, with no requirement to ship the defective unit back.

So... if the same thing happens to you, call, be nice and maybe you'll get one too.

Ok, so I have read a hundred pages of the craziest ideas on how to fix "Error 0x97" and most do nothing and a few actually will render a temp fix. So, here is the real deal in (4) four simple steps, at least this is how I fixed ours at work.

(1) go into your "Control Panel" then click on "Device Manager" click the Drop Down on labeled "Printers"
Make sure your computer is near your printer when you do this.
When you click the "Drop Down" you will likely see (3) three or more printers that all say your Epson Model.
(2) Turn your printer off and one of those will disappear, that is your printer.
(3) Right click each remaining printer and disable
(4) Turn your Printer back on and your printer will reappear on the list and it will now be the only active printer and you will be good to go.

It appears that somewhere along the way, the printer got reinstalled and this is causing interference with the program. files running the printer.

  1. Open the printer casing and check for any jammed papers or debris. If you find any, remove it.
  2. Remove all printing cartridges
  3. Unplug all the USBs and cables
  4. Once the printer is disconnected, press the power button as if you were trying to turn on the printer. This will discharge any residual current in the printer
  5. Now reconnect all the USBs and power cable
  6. Turn on your printer and check for the error

Apparently cleaning with a wet towel or wet wipe is needed.

Don't be tricked into downloading antivirus software from some web sites that are actually malicious.

Example of cleaning suggestions:

"Before you buy a new one. Clean the rolls and ink holder in the printer with a wet wipe or wet cloth. Start it without the ink cart, it should then ask you to insert it. Insert it then and it will go through the new ink routine. I did that twice and it fix the error.
It seem like one of the nozzle might be clog up and clean and forcing the printer to push more ink out will clear the clog."

How do I fix error code 0x97 on Epson printer

0x97 is a scanner circuit board error. You can reset your printer by unplugging it from the wall for a few minutes, and then trying again. Unplug is not the same as "turn off". Other than that, service center is your only answer.

What is error 0x97 and how do you fix and prevent from happening again

I think that is a printed circuit board (PCB) problem and is not user repairable. You might try unplugging the printer, wait about 10 - 15 minutes, hold down the power on button and plug the printer back, continuing to hold down the power on button for at least 60 seconds. If it doesn't clear the error code, it's a circuit board problem. If the printer is out of warrantee, it's cheaper to buy a new printer.

On an Epson WF-4630, what does error code 0x97 mean and how do I correct it?

I am on my second printer with the error. Epson explained it is a motherboard failure. The error is not caused by a PC or the software on it. Instead, this is a printer hardware failure.

After exchanging the printer, the replacement printer has now dies from the same error. The problem starts as blurry printing and progresses to the full hardware failure. Once the Hardware fails and you get the error code, there is nothing an end user can do. The motherboard needs to be replaced.

My printers were working fine up until I swapped out the factory cartridges that shipped with the printer. In both of my cases, there were no issues or symptoms until I started using the Epson XL cartridges. As soon as I installed those, the symptoms started to show. Within a couple of months after swapping in the XL cartridges, the motherboard dies.

Options:
1) Call Epson and complain, make them log the details even if it is out of warranty. This helps establish the pattern and knowledge of the issue.
2) Swap printer if under warranty. They may want a credit card to charge in case they do not receive the bad printer back. Just resend it in the box the replacement came in. Epson supplies shipping labels and covers the shipping costs.
