MC Dies upon ANY throttle application. HELP!

I need some tips on where to start. My shadow will start, with full choke. After it starts, I can SLOWLY reduce the choke, to where its idling. But the moment I put ANY input into the throttle, the bike dies. I've tried even gingerly to apply the throttle, and I can't get past the idle. Any thoughts on where to start or look? It ran fine the year before.

Agree totally with Ted's answer old fuel causes all manner of problems. I have seen this happen many times over the years of riding bikes and other petrol engine run machinery.

Petrol lasts about 3 months normally then the stuff goes bad and coats all surfaces it is in contact with a brown almost varnish like coating. Jets and small bore orifices get blocked. A total strip down of the carb[s] is sometimes necessary as trying to to use solvents or airlines will not clear the blockage. You can try carb and choke cleaner spray if you are not confident on stripping down the carb[s]. Remove the carbs from the bike and spray into every hole you can find remove pilot air screws and clean them thoroughly.

Last but not least drain the carbs and tank, half fill tank with new fuel find some in tank fuel system cleaner these will work with carbs and injectors. Use about half the bottle ans see if the engine recovers as you ride. Good luck

Odds are that if it sat for a year with fuel in it, the carb may be gummed up. Opening the throttle will cause an immediate engine stop if it is not getting fuel.

I'd recommend a "clean out the carb" project, including using air to blow out allof the small orifices.

Ryobi 9600 backpack blower. Starts great. Set to run, continues running. Upon attempt to use throttle, engine dies. Acts like choking out but removed carb cover an choke is no closing.

this sounds strangely like the high speed jet/pathway in the carb is clogged up with something ,

the best way to fix it is dissasmbly and cleaning of carb in solvent , but ive also had some limited sucess in past of using car fuel cleaner (says on bottle "cleans as you drive") too

It star with hoke on the maximum position only, is i throttle it dies imediatly. WHy ?

The choke setting required for starting is related to the temperature. In cold weather, a full choke is normally needed ; in normal temp (70 degrees F) a moderate choke may be all that is needed. Of course, once the engine starts, you may need to adjust the choke as the engine warms up - when ready to ride, you will want to have zero choke set. Hope this helps !

Fuel starvation either too the carb or in the carb itself, start with a simple cheap fix, replace the fuel filter in the tank on the end of the fuel hose.

have you left the choke open ? this mixes more fuel to the engine upon starting but will stall it if left open too long . check your fuel filter too it may be full of debris.

Weedeater dies when you open choke

After you start it and are in the second stage of the choke (half choke ) let it run for awhile until it warms a bit then try openning choke and going to full throttle.

Engine does not continue to run

Are you laying off the choke at any point? Full choke should only be used when starting a cold engine, it should run with no choke on full throttle. If there is not enough throttle i'd first try adjusting the tiny black screw on the carb beneath your air filter while you have it idling, letting the throttle have a little bit more room. If this doesn't work and you're running it properly than you may need to make some adjustments to the H L settings for your gas/air mix. This is also done while idling mind you and only with a clean air filter.

Hard to start lawn tractor

I have 2009 lawn tractor that will not start (from day 1) unless I use a small squirt
of start fluid into the air cleaner area. Nothing else seems to work. The battery will run down before it starts. Once engine is warm it starts great. Love the tractor,
hate the starting problem. Elevation is not a problem in michigan.

Only runs on full throttle

Are you saying full throttle, or full choke? if full throttle, you should be able to set the idle up. the idle screw will be the one when you give it gas, it will be the screw on you'r throttle linkage. If full choke, maybe the spark arrestor is plugged. You can remove it by removing the muffler.It would be between the muffler and cylinder head. You don't need this to run.I hope any thing I posted will help.

Wont rev up

Oh, a little reaserch answered that for me anyways. Cleaning out the spark plugs is always a good place to start, then you can move on to the fuel filter or carburator(if applicable)

1998 honda shadow will not start

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, a few possibilities you may want to check/explore:
  • stale gasoline;
  • clogged fuel filter (inside the tank above the fuel shutoff valve;
  • clogged, bocked, varnished, gummed carbs, jets, air pin holes;
  • stuffed air filter/box;
  • vacuum leak (rubber coupling, manifold side);
  • air leak (airbox base assembly seated/fitted on the carbs.
Basically, a general cleanup of the fuel lines, tank and the carbs. Sitting for some time tends to leave varnish like coating on most parts.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.
