Hp photosmart R727 reset problem

When i turn the camera power on it gives a crimson color screen and says for just one second:

Camera has experienced an error

000000018-4489-957-000

please reset your camera

I don't know how to reset the camera. Can you tell me how?
Thanks so much.

I bought this camera 14 months ago. I have had issues with it locking up which is annoying. Then one day I got a red screen and a 000000018-4489-957-000 error message. After researching, contacting HP and visiting discussion boards, I discovered it was a hardware problem. The long and the short of it is, once the hardware fails, the camera is done! It will cost you around $150+ to fix it and HP thinks you should pay that after spending $250+ for the camera. Of course HP believes that 14 months is a reasonable amount of time to not make them liable for the junk they are manufacturing in China. It is clearly a manufacturing defect! Search the message boards and you will read about the frustrations of others with the hardware failure problem. Don't waste your money on the Photosmart line of products. I am going to stick with the traditional photo equipment manufacturers in the future.

We have the same error on our camera, R727. Bought the camera in Aug. '06, last used 12/31/07. Tried to use it after the new year and got the error. Called HP and they said it's a hardware problem. Have it under extended warranty with Best Buy, so took it in to them. Whomever they contract with claim they can't fix due to some other "mysterious" problem. We couldn't find any info about how to "reset" the camera. Please share your solutions as we will seemingly be stuck with a busted $200+ camera and good for nothing warranty. Thanks!

Camera gets same error message. Also called HP twice and got the same run a round.I was told by tech. that he had never had a call regarding this type of error on the R727, Camera can't be fixed, out of warranty etc. It was purchased Dec 2006 and last used Dec 2007.So basically I am stuck with a useless camera. Tried resetting to no avail.I will never purchase a HP camera again. My sister has the same camera,I hope she doesn't have the same thing happen to her.

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2008

Okay so what I did what take the battery out and the memory card, and pressed the reset button for 10 sec. I turned the camera on then nothing, but I did notice that the shutter was still open. So I quickly snapped the camera corner closest to the lens in my hand to try to shut the lens. Once I did that and the lens was close I was able to turn the camera on, and it works!

  • luciankiss May 10, 2008

Yeah same shits happening to me and its been 3 months

  • belle_jules Jul 30, 2008

I had the same problem, and I just did what the girl down said "just gently smack a couple of time" and amazing... It works now! so try to do it if you have the same problem with your camera.

  • Anonymous Aug 09, 2008

If your lens is stuck open, smack the camera a few times as you are turning it on and it should fix the problem. Worked for me. Hooray!! The internet is a wonderful place!

I was getting the same error code as mentioned by others and HP support told me I had an internal hardware problem and the camera needed to be replaced, which bummed me out since I liked my camera. We found this website and a solution to the problem.

  • Anonymous Sep 27, 2008

I had the same issue with the camera ! Tried everything, I thought. But then I read the message about smacking the camera on hte corner to get the shutter to shut, I did it, turned it on and BINGO! Works again!

  • Anonymous Sep 29, 2008

Super Cool... Thanks, the smack trick worked.

had the same problem, my bf refused to hit it so i looked up the instructions on how to reset it on hp.com. that still didn't worked so i smacked it a couple of times and it worked!

i have the same problem error code 00000018-4489-957-000 red screen camera has been hardly used whats up

  • oconnor2007 Nov 29, 2008

I had the same issue with the camera error screen. I read alot of your posts and thought you guys were seriously crazy ... but what else was there to lose. Camera wouldn't work - so I smacked it a few times, plugged in the charger and it worked! Something does seem fishy about this solution. I mean to fix a camera, you have to smack it. Way to go HP!!! I wouldn't necessaryly recommend it - but if it is your last resort, give it a shot.

I had the exact same problem and to my amazement, the gentle "smacking" absolutely worked. Camera is working again, but looking to buy a non-HP camera asap! Maybe this is why HP stopped making cameras. Not a very reliable investment. Too bad HP just lost another customer.

  • Anonymous Feb 06, 2009

Same problem -- same smack -- it works

Same problem "Camera has experienced an error 000000018-4489-957-000 please reset your camera "

Resetting per hp website instructions didn't work - neither did the gentle smack UNTIL I plugged the recharger into it. Voila!

  • traintown Mar 17, 2009

I had the same problem and it's fixed now with the "gentle" smack. Thank you very much! This is the only problem I've ever had with this camera and I still like it. Hope the smack works the next time.....

  • Anonymous Apr 08, 2009

Same problem. The error message isn't there long enough to really read. Says to reset the camera, which I don't know how to do.

Oddly enough, I gave it a couple smacks after reading it here. It seems to be working now. *hoping it keeps working*

  • Anonymous Apr 18, 2009

Seriously ... I've had the same problem with that error message, my camera has been sitting in the box for months. I thought I'd check this site just for the heck of it, smacked it against my leg - and it turned right on.

    Unbelievable.

  • Anonymous Apr 29, 2009

LOL! This is hilarious, but not a good pratical resolution. However, it worked! Thanks. Very interesting.

  • Anonymous May 21, 2009

That's great! This has happened to me twice now. The first time I was able to reset it (stick a paper clip in the little tiny hole by the battery). THis time it wouldn't work. I found this website, and slammed it against my leg thinking I had nothing to lose, and it turned right on! Thanks everyone!

  • Anonymous May 22, 2009

LOL...i just logged on to this website because i was having the same problem with my camera. my husband thought i was crazy when i told him to "hit the camera" a few times...but he finally gave in and it work!!! so if your camera won't turn on...do like the rest of us and just hit the camera a few times against your leg or hit it with your hand a few times and it will work :o)...LOL

  • Anonymous May 26, 2009

I had the same exact problem, with the "Red sreen of death" with the reset message. I tried the taking the battery out several times and pushing the reset button. When none of those solutions worked, I took the "what do I have to lose?" approach. The first time I smacked the camera lens side down on my leg. Nothing happened. Next I smacked the camera battery cover side down and "whalla!" The camera turned on and asked me to confirm the date and time.

I have had this camera for fivre years and have not had a problem until now. I am very happy with the camera and amazed by the battery life to this day.

I thought all of you were from outer-space when I saw you referencing "hitting the camera on a leg or desk", but I take it all back. It worked when nothing else would! Now I think I should be looking for a new camera. I don't know how many traumatic thumps this thing can take. THX.

Unbelievable. I too was skeptical about the smack against the leg. The reset button did not work and neither did removing the batteries. I thought, well it is broke may as well try the smack against the leg. I smacked it one good time on my leg, hit the power button and it is working great again. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Generally not a good sign, as the red screen indicates a hardware error.

You can force a reset by removing the battery, then reinstall it and try to turn it on.

Try http://www.precisioncamera.com/ for camera repairs.

Camera can be reset using the pi hole after you slode open the base where you have the memory card.. But this does not solve the problem. What is interesting is, that I had the same problem when I bought a new one about a year back within the first 5 days. I returned it to the store for a new one (same model) which worked for about 6 months, and ever since been giving the exact same error..!! I agree with another post here is that HP maybe good for orinters but should stay away from cameras .... (I've heard horror stories about their PC too)..

Two ways: 1. Go into the menu and find "reset"...follow the on-screen instructions. 2..Remove the card and battery...press all the buttons...leave it alone for 20 minutes...insert the card and then the battery...turn it on.

How do you reset an HP R727 camera? It comes up saying it has experienced an error 5555AAAA-61EE-14B-031 as soon as you switch it in. Battery is fully charged.

Hello,
Normaly the repair service reset camera by using special file on the SD card. This file is impossible to find it on the internet. But you can try to update FW maybe it will help to this error message. You can try download lates FW for R727 from google.(Last FW version is 3.02.15).
Then extract exe file and copy FW file to the SD card.Put SD card into the camera and close battery door.Hold Shutter button and power on camera. After FW update is complete just power off camera. Then try it again to swith on.If it will not help the only way is send camera into the repair service.

Best Regards

My Photosmart R727 Will Dont Turn on. i had t at a party and it was working fine then half way throo the night it went off while i was taking a photo and it will not turn back on anyone no what could be...

With the battery in, use a small paperclip and stick it in the hole next to the battery compartment. This is a reset button. If that does not work, close the battery cover and give a good medium smack against your leg. I know that sounds crazy but it works about 9 times out of ten with the HP cameras.

HP R727 stays on 2 seconds then flashes contact HP

Try holding in the reset button longer then the recommended 6 seconds.
I've fixed many of these Photosmart series this way.

Please help!!

Try a safety pin in the reset hole by the battery compartment most paper clips seem to be much to big. Also hold the reset for at least 3 seconds. The first time I tried I just pushed it down quickly and it did not reset. I just fixed my mom's camera with the exact same error. So safety pin and hold 3 seconds. For a diagram of the reset hole see web site1.gif mentioned in jimg's suggestion
