Yes you need to split cases to check the transmission and once you've spitted the cases, it is best to renew the bearings cause is quite a trouble to do that again soon if any of the bearing are about to go bad.
Assuming you have the proper equipment to service the unit the best option is to weigh in the charge- superheat/subcooling calculations fly out of the window on mini-splits and the frustration and time spent trying to achieve proper refrigerant balance is more pricy than recovering the charge and reweighing it into the system. i have change mine with open motor while reparing my transmission and i`m not sure that`s a good idea to change it in place, but if it`s work you will save time. I took about 8 hours to close transmission and motor and take it back in place.
you must remove the plate from the bottom of the transmission. Look for a shaft that goes from the rear through a gear. Remove snap ring from in front of gear and it should roll apart then. On reassembly be sure to change gasket and all o rings to prevent hydraulic suction leaks
