SOURCE: Wiring the replacement 3 speed switch (fan motor)

I called King of Fans and the rep that I spoke with gave me the correct wiring for the 3 speed switch:

L White
1 Yellow
2 Blue
3 Black

The problem is that after I wired it this way I am getting the same result (off on 3 settings and a motor hum on 1 setting). So, either the Westinghouse switch that I bought at Home Depot is not compatible or it is the capacitor. The saga continues.

SOURCE: Wiring a ceiling fan w/light

To add to red54's comments:

This is what I believe you have:

- one source in the ceiling box (black & white)

- one donwline circuit in ceiling box going to another wall/ceiling box (black&white)

- on switch wire in ceiling box coming from your wall switch (black & white) -- this is the white wire which will be hot when the switch is truned on

Here's how it should be connected:

- all 3 blacks in ceiling box connected together -- no other wires in this bundle

- white wire (which is hot when switched) coming from switch connects to the black/blackwhite fan wires

- connect all reamining white wires together in bundle

- connect all ground wires together

It's that simple. Trick is figuring out, of the three cables in the ceiling box, which is source, which is downline, which is switch.
Maybe red54's procedure can help you figure that out.

Black wire, white wire, and tan wire coming from ceiling. New fan has blue, black, white wire and green wire on the bracket how does it hook up

1. Have on hand either wire connectors or electrical tape

2. Look at the wires coming from your ceiling fan. The black wire from the ceiling fan is the hot wire that runs the motor and turns the fan blades. The white wire is neutral and completes the fan circuit. The blue wire is the hot wire for the ceiling fan light fixture. The ceiling fan motor does not have a ground wire.

3. Find the short green wire or the green ground screw on your ceiling fan hanging bracket. Attach the bare copper wire from your electrical box to the short green wire by twisting and orange wire connector to the two wires. If you only have a green ground screw, wrap the bare copper wire around this screw and tighten the screw against the bracket to secure the wire.

4. Match the end of the white insulated wire from the ceiling fan to the end of the white wire from your electrical box. Twist a wire connector onto the two wires to complete the neutral circuit.

5. Connect the black insulated wire from the ceiling fan to the black insulated wire from the electrical box. If you do not have a separate toggle switch on the wall to operate the ceiling fan and light separately, grab the blue wire and place it with the black wire from the fan motor and the black insulated wire from the electrical box. Twist a wire connector to all three wires. If you have the additional toggle switch, connect the two black wires together with an orange wire connector, and then match the blue wire and the red wire together. Twist another orange wire connector on the red and blue wires

I got my craftmade ceiling fan about 10 years ago, the fan has now stopped working but the light works, I changed out the switch on the wall that was not the problem sometimes I will turn on the wall...

pretty sure its the 3 speed pull chain switch.$4.50 to $6.00 at home depot or lowes or hardware/elecrtical store.
how 2 replace switch.
1.turn off breaker to fan/fan lights, probably that whole room.
may need extension cord & floor lamp from closest room with electric, so u can see.
2.need 6ft step ladder to get up to fan.look see how to get to fan speed switch. speed switch unscrews from outside but body of switch is inside fan cover.
3. need to take fan off ceiling to replace switch.
4.switch has 4 wires, power feed into switch and 3 selector
wires that go to high speed winding, medium speed winding and low speed winding.
speed selector switch has 4 settings, off, low, medium, high.

about ac circuits , black wire is 120 volts, hot.
white wires are neutral return wire. an ac voltmeter will read 120volts ac with its red and black probes between black, hot and
white,neutral.
white= neutal=ground which is green. If wired properly and polarity was observed, white and green ground wires both connect to the neutral ground buss bar in the circuit breaker panel box and are the same electrical point.

black wires, and the selector handle getting the hot juice into the fan and white returns the used juice to the circuit breaker panel box.
If polarity was observed, you can touch white and ground without getting a shock.
black will jolt or even fry you dead, so make sure the breaker to the fan is off, so that the circuit is de-energized before you touch it.

PLEASE NOTE--- make drawing on paper of what color wires from the fan motor go to what color wires on the selector switch.
If the switch has 4 black wires, you need to put different color electrical tape as a marker, on each wire. or ,to be cheap, you can use white paper, scissors to cut paper, and pencil and write 1,2,3,4 on the paper and tape to the 4 switch wires.

that is: wire # 1 from the switch goes to the black wire from the wall--ac hot
wire #2 from switch goes to yellow fan motor winding,
wire # 3 from switch goes to orange wire from fan motor

wires are specific and NOT interchangeable.

go to www.ehow.com & type into search engine box
how to replace fan motor speed selector switch.

Notes: NOTE: Jeep vehicles that use a gray ignition key have an immobilizer system that needs to be bypassed when remote starting. Use DEI part number 555C or 555U. *1 Use orange/black and pink/black at the drivers door lock switch to lock and unlock the drivers door. Use orange/purple and pink/purple at the passengers door lock switch to lock and unlock all of the other doors. *2 The dk. blue/pink will flash the hazard lights. They will flash even with a latch input to the wire. The parking lights can be activated by using a 1300 ohm resistor to ground on the yellow headlight wire. *3 Use a 330 ohm resistor to ground for headlight activation. Use 80 ohms to ground on the same wire to operate both the headlights and parking lights. *4 There are 4 separate door triggers wire, one for each door. Use all 4 wires and diode isolate each together. The drivers door is tan/red at the drivers door lock switch. The passenger door is tan/red at the passengers door lock switch. The drivers rear door is tan/orange and the passengers rear door is tan/yellow at the BCM. WHEN USING A 455J INTERFACE MODULE, IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO USE THE SEPARATE TRIGGER WIRES. USE THE YELLOW WIRE AT THE UNDERDASH LIGHT FOR DOOR TRIGGER. *5 Factory alarm disarm requires a 463 ohm resistor to ground on the lt.green/orange wire at the drivers door lock switch, you MUST use a relay. *6 The 4.7L motor has a separate coil for each cylinder. Go to any coil and use any wire that is NOT dk. green/orange. On the 4.0L motor use any of the tan/stripe wires at the coil pack, or go to one of the fuel injector and use the wire that is NOT dk. green/orange. *7 Can also use DEI part number 455J door lock interface control module. This will control door lock, unlock, arm, disarm, dome light supervision and more.

Notes:
NOTE: This vehicle is equipped with a passive immobilizer that needs to be bypassed for remote start operation only. Use DEI part number 555U to bypass. *1 The DDM (drivers door module) is located in the center of the drivers door. *2 Requires a double pulse to unlock. *3 Parking lights require a negative trigger with a 1800 ohm resistor in-line to the white/green wire. Using a negative trigger with a 780 ohm resistor in-line to the same white/green wire will turn on the headlights as well as the parking lights. *4 This wire may cause the aftermarket alarm to false when the vehicles electrical system shuts down. Use a relay to isolate it. *5 The FEM (Front Electronic Module) is located in the drivers kick panel. The REM (Rear Electronic Module) is located in the trunk, just above the battery. hope that helps
