Thanks for your reply pennywhistler but that is what i have looked at in my manual but it does not allow to go to bass/treble....only balance.I believe it will be an internal issue and would like to know if there is a fix that someone might know without the great expense...Thanks Simon.

The only other thing I can think of is that you are in some surround program that doesn't allow for adjusting B & T. Can you reset to ordinary 2-channel stereo and sees what happens?

I don't know either, Simon. (I have never owned a surround receiver.) I looked up the manual online and took an educated guess based on how other things work. Glad to help.

How do i adjust the treb/bass?

my initial reply was...On the function button you may need to depress it for 3 seconds to activate base, treble, balance etc But
then I found this, "Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 7-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.
Cheers, this should help ya.

Adjust

I have an Alpine CDA-9813 and to access bass, treble, fade, and balance, you need to press the volume button. This button is usually rotated to adjust the volume but on mine, if you press it in, first time accesses bass, second press accesses treble, 3rd press accesses balance(left to right), and 4th press accesses fading (forward to rear. Press it a 5th time and it either brings you back to volume or back to the main screen. I think it is volume tho. I would assume that the 9853 would work very similar, if not the same.

I need to find out what buttons control the bass and treble

Press in on the volume control repeatedly to step through the menu of audio functions. The
first option is Volume, followed by subwoofer (only if the subwoofer feature is currently
activated), Bass, Treble, Balance, Fader and back to Volume. When adjusting audio functions,
the unit will automatically exit audio control mode after five seconds of inactivity
