Hi, this is Jim with Crucial Vacuum,
More than likely there is an issue with your vacuums belt. It may be loose, which is causing the beater bar to not turn. Check to see if there's a good bit of tension around the beater bar. On average you're going to want to replace your belt every 3 months depending on use.
Aside from this check for any debris that may be wrapped around the beater bar. Manually turn it to uncover any hidden clogs behind. Once this is cleared out and your belt is either adjusted or replaced you shouldn't have any further issues.
I'm unsure as to which specific vacuum model you have but we offer a wide variety of replacement belts. Check us out at Crucial Vacuum. We even offer free shipping and an exclusive 10% coupon for Fixya.com readers, use code: FIXYA10

It's likely that the belt is just slipping. Remove the bar and clean all hair, threads and other debris it collects in the bristles and around the ends. Check the belt for wear of the rubber; it may have teeth on it unless they were worn off from slipping. In that case you need a new one but save the old one for it's model number to purchase on line.
SOURCE: beater bar brush stopped working...
Does the power head motor stop, or does the brush roll stop. If it is the brush roll stopping, replace the belt and/or the brush roll. If it is the motor, you may need to clean out around the motor, it may not be getting enough air to cool causing it to overheat and stopping. That the brush roll plate off, take out the screw, and the top will come off, then you can check to see if cleaning is the answer, if not, the motor may be bad.

The belt doesn't have to be broken to make the vacuum not work correctly. If the belt is stretched the vacuum won't operate the way it is supposed to. You can get replacement Dyson Belts here:

Yes, you need to replace the belt. You should actually change this belt every year. Here is a link to the belt you need and the manual which has instructions:

WAIT!!! Don't replace the entire clutch yet... I just had the same problem. Before buying a new clutch assembly, I took the out the clutch just to make sure I could do it (the link previously mentioned is great: http://www.dysonmedic.com/DC07%20Folder/DC07%20Clutch%20replacement.html). In the process, I also opened the clutch at the wide end (two screws and a little retaining clip on the side - can watch a video as to how to disassemble the clutch here: http://www.ezvacuum.com/dyson-dc04-dc07-and-dc14-belt-pack-for-clutch-system-90251401-2-pack-p-2196.html?currency=USD). In the "lid" you will see a little black plate (looks like the same material that a car breakpad is made out of). If the clutch is the problem this plate will look a little worn down. It can be removed and flipped over. You'll get a few more years out of it. Of course, when the second side wears out, you'll have to get a new clutch (but by then maybe the the entire vac will need replacing anyway). Enjoy.
