The machine goes fast and slow when the pedal is depressed at maximum. The measured resistance also varies up and down. What is the most common cause for this? after undoing the two screws on the foot pedal, how do we proceed to open it?
The foot control function for a motor run condition is variable from 4k ohms to 0 ohms with full depression of the foot control top plate. Heeling back on this control makes a 10k ohms signal for needle down function.
To remove the top cover, peel back the vinyl top covering to expose a single hole above each of the two plastic axle or hinge pins located on each side of the top cover. Insert a pin punch (or other tool)
appropriate in size through the hole, placing the pin end against the hinge pin and pry/pop out the hinge pin. Pull out the hinge pins and remove the cover. Reverse the process to assemble the cover. To insert the barbed vinyl projections on the bottom side of the vinyl top covering, moisten the projections with a little KY jelly and reinsert into the holes in the top plate.

SOURCE: Bernina Activa 135 foot pedal problem
If you can get acess to or borrow another foot pedal to try I would do this first any of the Activa, Artista range fit to try. The fault may not be in the foot pedal but in the main CB of the machine. This can give a fualt of lights on but no motor drive. In this case the board would need replacing by a technician. Hope this may help.
SOURCE: bernina 830, worked fine until today... think it
there is a board inside the foot pedal that goes out sometimes you can check this by flipping the foot pedal upside down and at the top right there is a small hole where you can adjust the speed with a flat head screwdriver but be gentle it breaks easy, if its out you can take it to a bernina dealer and they might have a reapired one or they can send yours off for repair since that part is repair only
