Trying to take ownership of a hard drive but have to reset security and permissions for every folder sub folder and file and object must be easier way but what ?

Look for a box labelled "Apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only" in Advanced security

It sounds like you need to 'Take Ownership' of the files on your new computer - this is something you can do with a Hard drive formatted with the Windows / NTFS File system (You will need to be logged on with Administrator privileges on your new computer) - Connect your old hard drive to your new computer (using a USB interface / or directly via SATA / IDE) Open your 'My Computer' Folder using windows Explorer - Right Click the drive representing your old hard drive and choose Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner --- Click the Edit button and change the owner to the account you are currently logged on with -- then save and close the security properties dialog - The Next time you open the security properties dialog you should be able to change the level of access to "allow everything" - If this is applied to an entire Hard Drive and you choose to change the owner on all sub directories and items within them it may take several minutes or even longer with a large drive 500 GB / 1 TB etc...

Make sure your user account has administrator rights.
To determined your user account:
For Windows XP:
1. Click on Start then select Run
2. type control userpasswords2
3.Click on OK

For Vista and Windows 7:
1. Click on Start then on the bottom to search for Program or files
2. Type run
3. Click on Run then type control userpasswords2
4. Click on OK

If your user account has an administrative rights then there is problem on permission or ownership on the hard drive or a folder.

This can occur if there is a folder permissions issue or some settings within the Blu Ray Player which might cause this. It could also be the security program blocking the share.

A few things you can try is creating a separate shared folder on the desktop rather than using the shared documents and then try accessing it from the player.

You can also try to disable your firewall and security program and then try accessing the shared folder.

Try turning off user account control and check.

You might also be able to resolve the problem by taking ownership of the folder.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the folder that you cannot open was created on an NTFS file system volume by using a previous installation of Windows, and then installing Windows XP. This issue may occur although you enter the correct user name and password. This issue occurs because the security ID for the user has changed. Although you use the same user name and password, your security ID no longer matches the security ID of the owner of the folder that you cannot open.

For example, although you use the same user name and password, you may no longer have permission to open the folder after you complete the following steps:
1. Before you install Windows XP Professional, you change the actual location, or target location, of the My Documents folder to another volume.

2. You format the primary partition.

3. You install Windows XP Professional.

To resolve this issue, you must turn off Simple File Sharing, and then take ownership of the folder:
1. Turn off Simple File Sharing:
a. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
