please help me,i have problem in my printer, wifi on printer can't search .... I too was given the generic "5100" error message just tonight.
Did you download the software from the disc that was included with your printer? If it didn't come with a disc go to the Canon web site and find your printer and download the latest software from them then after you have done that, shut down your computer, start it back up again and try to print, that should solve your problem, but make sure you reboot after installing software so that it can update your system....

Hi You can Try
Error Code 5100
Solution 1: Clean the timing strip.
Solution 2: The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough .
Lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps); this repair probably require to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. Hope it do for you All The Best: Pineworks
