It seems like the feed dog does not grip the material. also stiches are uneven sometimes tight little stitches and then looser larger stitches.

I don't have a solution, but wanted to remind users of this machine that it does not do the proper free motion action until you reach a certain speed. This information is on page 26 of my manual (older machine, so page no. might have changed with newer manuals). You can stitch at the lower speeds, but it does not "hover" and allow you to move the project swiftly and smoothly.
If you can sew regular sewing without thread/bobbin issues, then it is probably something to do with how you have set/threaded/used the free motion to cause the stoppage. Make sure you have a sharp (i.e. new) needle of the correct size for your thread, that the bobbin thread is the same weight thread as the top thread. Turn on the Needle Down button. There is a Free Motion setting in the Set menu, but I have no idea what it does. I turn it on anyway, just in case! What foot are you using? If you don't have one of the free motion feet (there are quite a few to choose from!) use the embroidery foot (small clear plastic one).

Did you turn the handwheel? The feed teeth will not come up until the machine is operated. Run it a few stitches and they will come up.

Knowing which kind of machine you have helps alot. Just guessing but maybe the reverse mechanism is stuck and needs some oil in it to free it up. Or the buttonhole mechanism is stuck in reverse part of it.
Probably you should have it looked at.

The little white button on the lower right front of the machine is the button that drops the feed teeth. If it is pressed in the feed teeth are down, push in a lift upward to be sure it's in the "Up" position. Then look on the left side of the machine, you'll see a dial, (NOT the dial facing you as you sit in front of the machine) make sure the red dot on the dial is lined up with the red dot on the painted part of the machine.
Finally look at the dial on the front of the machine. The one with the little button in the center of it. Put it on the number 3. If your machine doesn't feed fabric after doing what I've outlined then you need to take it in for service.
