Brand new mower out of the box, got it together, primed, turns over but shuts right off like it's not getting gas. Is there a shut off switch or something?

You don't say what kind. I know Honda's mowers have a fuel shut off on some of them. Check the gas line to see if it's clear

SOURCE: mower won't stay running

carb is gummed up. carb cleaner is the only thing that will help, Get it at walmart, spray can usually less than $3. Comes with a wand (straw) for spraying in small holes etc. Take the air filter off and look for small holes around inside the carb intake, stick the straw right in those and shoot, WEAR goggles or classes and rubber gloves, stuff is nasty. If it still won't run you will need to do some disassemble of the carb, if it has a bowl remove it and wash everything out with the cleaner.DO NOT however get the carb cleaner on the bowls top rubber ring it will wreck it. Be careful to put the float and needle and seat back as they were. The brass screw that holds the bowl on has some tiny cross holes in it, one strand from a wire brush works great for cleaning them out. Good Luck, Chuck

SOURCE: mowers is not getting gas

Check your float ... it might be sticking in the upward position when the fuel well fully fills? This would cause the mower to run on the fuel that gets inside the line when you prime it, but since the float stuck in the upward position would close the intake line from the gas tank, your mower would die after the priming fuel is spent.
[The float is located inside the metal bowl beneath the carburator usually, and can be opened by removing a single bolt/screw in the center of the bottom of the bowl. Be careful to pay attention to how the valve-pin attached to the float is attached; usually it's just hooked on very loosely. Thouroughly clean the float, pin & inside of the bowl, then reassemble after making sure the float moves freely.] If the problem isn't solved by this, you might have an obstruction (like a leaf-cutter wasp nest) in your fuel line between the gas tank & carburator? Check the float first.

SOURCE: My Toro lawn mower starts good, but it only runs

Sounds like you need a carb cleaning. Also install some Seafoam gas additive in your gas tank to clean out the gunk that builds up. Do not use ethanol gas.

SOURCE: mower starts up after priming, runs for a few

The carb needs to be taken off and cleaned. The ethanol in gasoline absorbs water and causes problems. Disassemble carb and clean with carb cleaner.

Mower shuts off as soon as you release parking brake and in park will shut off if you turn blade on

You most likely have a safety switch issue, try un-plugging the switch in question and holding the wire connectors together with a small vise grip and do a test to see if it will run. If it stays running, then replace the switch in question before using your machine.

sounds like your choke is not shutting all the way. Throttle pushed all the way up should shut the choke, if you can look into the intake of the carb to see if the butterfly is shut and if not loosen the cable sheath clamp and side the cable until it does shut it and make sure the lever is still in the full throttle position

My troybilt bronco riding mower won't start the gas n oil r fine when I turn key it has no fire

possibly a bad starter switch which has a built in kill switch. There is a wire that goes up to the coil that is used to kill the spark when you shut it down and also goes in the safety circuit to prevent it from starting unless everything is in the right position. sometimes you can unhook the wire and still run safely. if it doesn't shut down when the switch is in the off position a toggle switch can be wired in to ground the circuit if you need it.

I have a 158cc lawnmower Model PO500n22S (or 5). It starts but then stops as if shut off or out of gas. I re-prime and the process repeats. The mower Is brand new and only used twice.HELP!!!

It is acting like the main jet is blocked in the carburetor. This may have happened by debris from in the gas can entering the tank during fill up. The only way to find out though is to take the carburetor apart and inspect it.

I hope this helps you get it running.

Shuts right down after starting , when i prime it , it just makes a hissing sound

If it started and ran well already this season, then it is probably some blockage in the carb. Does it have gas? If you prime it and it starts and dies, it is most likely the carb or float. You have to take the carb off disassemble and clean it out. It is either some debris in the main jet or a stuck float valve. Clean things up with carb cleaner and put it all back together. Should operate fine them. Good luck.
