When running the vacuum the brush does not turn. Is it the belt or the gear?

Hi William, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC33 doesn't use a traditional, user-replaceable belt. Instead, the two belts are part of the brush control mechanism, which allows you to shut off the brush bar to clean hard floors and delicate rugs. These belts are engineered to last the lifetime of the machine in normal use.

If your DC33's brush bar isn't currently rotating, please follow each of the steps shown in our online Support guide, to rule out any simple issues: http://www.dyson.com/support/dc33/dc33-multifloor/using-my-dyson-list/flo-dc07-gen-how-to-remove-a-blockage/redirect-to-removing-debris-from-the-brushbar-dc33/removing-debris-from-the-brushbar-dc33

It's also important to make sure your DC33's brush control is set to carpets rather than hard floors:

Hello, I have Dyson DC33. The brush bar isn't turning & the belt is on & intact. Any suggestions?

Hello, this is Ava with Think Crucial.

There are a number of reasons why your brush roller has stopped moving. General maintenance to your vacuum is crucial and will help it work at peak performance.

First things first lets focus on the brush roller. Unplug the vacuum and turn it on its side. Look for any noticeable clumps of debris or hair strands that may be caught in the brush roller. Remove these obstructions, probably best to do so with a scissor if it's hair or long pieces of carpet fibers. After removing the debris try manually rotating the brush roller to uncover other hidden clogs. Another thing to take note of is the condition of the bristles on the roll itself. Are they loose or worn down? These are signs that your brush roller is in need of replacing.

While checking out your brush roll you might as well take a look at your vacuums belt. Your belt should be replaced about every three months. After regular usage, the belt will stretch out, lessening the tension on the brush roller. Lesser tension diminishes the brush roller's turn rate and speed. If the belt feels loose then it certainly is affecting your vacuums suction as well as your brush roll not moving at all.

Brush is not rotating

Hi Barbara, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC33's brush bar will only rotate when the vacuum cleaner is turned on and reclined into the normal vacuuming position, and the brush control is set to 'Carpets':

If the vacuum cleaner is standing upright, or set to 'hard floors', the brush bar will not rotate.

If you're confident the brush control is set correctly, but the brush bar won't rotate when the machine is turned on and reclined, please contact our experts directly so we can talk you through some further troubleshooting checks. If a repair is needed, we can also confirm if this is covered under your Dyson warranty.

My Dyson DC33 isn't working correctly. It's not picking up like it used to. The brush isn't turning and the belt is fine. I've checked all filters, hoses and cleaned everything. Why is the brush not...

Is it possible that you have accidentally changed the brush control setting? I say this because it happened to me and I thought it had broken. I must have caught the dial with my foot! Here a link that might help:

I have a Dyson DC33 bagless vacuum and the beater brush is not turning .. How do I get the cover off the brush to change the belt?

If you lay it down so you can see the bottom of the vacuum, there should be 3 flathead looking screws, just turn them a quarter turn or so, and that bottom should pop off so you can take the brush out and change the belt, just make sure you watch how that brush comes out so you can get it back in correctly. Oh make sure its unplugged!!

How to change the belt on a dyson dc 33

With a small torx driver (not the folding kind, the screw driver kind) and some patience, the belts can be replaced pretty easily. They run about 10 bux for both (you may as well change both). Dyson, like most manufacturers, makes it seem difficult in the hopes that you'll send it back to them for repair, where they will most likely sell you the whole clutch assembly because its easier to replace than fiddling with belts.
