Beater bar Belt Removal from Upright Electrolux...
Posted by wrenn on Jul 14, 2008
I am trying to change the belt on an Electrolux Model 1717 Upright Vacuum and I am having difficulty disassembling the vacuum to remove the beater bar and belt.
Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. . Normally there are screws, clips or levers that would remove the bottom plate or if that does not work then the top cover will come off and that will expose the belt. Once that is off and the belt is exposed then cut off the old belt and then lift up the brushroll on the pulley end and install the new belt around the pulley end and re-install the brushroll. Then use a belt puller or a screwdriver with a bent right or left end to stretch the belt onto the motor pulley and then track the belt in a straight line and reverse you steps in the reinstall of the top cover or bottom plate. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Check your clutch to make sure it's engaged. There should be a knob on the foot of the vacuum that can be turned to stop the roller.

Remove the handle assembly by taking the big screw out and pull up on the handle. Remove the four screws where the top half connects to the bottom half. Two on the outside back and two on the inside front where the bag goes. You'll need a long phillips #2 screwdriver. Always have the power disconected. Pull up on the bag housing while twisting it side to side.
Good luck after you get in.

1. Uing the appropriate sized drift punch, tap out the steel axle rod which passes through the beater drum.
2. Each end cap houses a 608ZZ ball brg.
3. Check each brg for freedom of smooth rotation. Replace both if either is seized.
4. Replace with either 608ZZ (dbl shielded) or 608 2RS (dbl sealed) brgs.
5. Inspect and be prepared to replace the drive belt since it may have been damaged in the seizure event.

Check all the wiring connections to make sure they're tight.
1/2. Wiring to power nozzle motor or reset switch is loose.
1. Cord from power nozzle to upper wand. If the plastic portion of the wand is cracked near the cord connection, or the connections are blackened, they need replaced.
2. Wiring connection from hose handle to upper wand. Check for cracks and discoloration as in 1 above. Replace if necessary.
3. Hose connection to vacuum. Not likely, but possible.
4. There could very well be a break in the hose wiring.
You may need to take your vacuum, with hose and power nozzle, to an authorized Aerus Electrux service shop. They can try a new hoze to see if that's the problem. If there is a break in the wiring, the hose is probably worn in other areas as well, and should be replaced.
