The stepper motor or motors control the needle position. If one is reporting an error that just unplugging the machine and leaving it off for 15 minutes won't fix, it's time for a repair shop.
E1 means it out of order--something in the electronics is mess up--it needs to be serviced
by a service tech with the tools to check the electronics of the machine
I had the same problem. It was plug ed into an extension cord as soon as i plug-ed it into the wall socket presto it works. I sure hope your problem is this easy.
