I had this problem. you have to use a high speed usb port (2.0 i think) which is normally in the back of your computer and then it should be detected

Depending on which settings you have on the archos 5 or 7 itself, (you can select "Windows Media Player mode" or " Hard drive/PC/Mass Storage mode" when you choose enable USB a new letter will appear as shown below (if you are on XP - same goes for Vista):

My archos wont connect to my computer - d091313.gif

How do i update my Archos 504?

How to install firmware ..?(update)

Step 1. Download the firmware to your computer-->click HERE to download the update file When you download the update file, your browser may warn you that the file 'could be harmful'. This is normal because browsers are not familiar with files that have a .AOS extension and suspect that they could be malicious. These files are not harmful to your computer.

Step 2. Turn on your ARCHOS device and connect it to your computer with the USB cable

Step 3. On the ARCHOS, choose to connect and wait a few seconds for your device to be detected by the computer

Step 4. Copy and paste the downloaded firmware (.AOS file) to the ARCHOS device.
  • Case 1: logo_firm_hdd.jpg Your ARCHOS is detected by your computer as a Hard Drive (E: for example) in Windows® Explorer. Paste the update file directly onto the ARCHOS hard drive icon.
  • Case 2: logo_firm_g4.jpg Your ARCHOS device is detected as a 'Mobile Device' in Windows® Explorer (not as a hard drive) and you see just two folders Data and Media when you open it. Paste the update file into the folder called Data.
  • Case 3: logo_firm_g4.jpg Your ARCHOS device is detected as a 'Mobile Device' in Windows® Explorer (not as a hard drive) and you see Internal Hard Drive when you open it. Open this Internal Hard Drive icon and you will see the various ARCHOS folders inside (Video, Music, etc.). Paste the update file into this area but be careful not to paste it into any of the folders there.
Step 5. Disconnect the Device
Unplug the USB cable (for 'Mobile Device' connections) or use the "safe disconnect" green arrow icon (for Hard drive connection) in the system tray before unplugging the USB cable.

Step 6. On your ARCHOS device, click on "Update Firmware"
Click on the "tab" button to show the settings screen. Select the "System" icon and then click on the "Update Firmware" button. For the ARCHOS 104, 202, & 204, go to the settings and open the icon "System" where you can find the Update Firmware button.

My archos is showing recovery code 101

It is indicating that there is a hard drive fault. Here is another users suggested method to clear the fault.
Following some extensive use I switched it on one day to find that it hung on the Archos home screen and kept going in a loop. Luckily I could see the red HDD light flickering so knew that the Archos was trying to do something and that the HDD was recoverable. When I entered into the recovery mode I found that I had an recovery code (101) which indicates a HDD fault.

I used the following steps to recover the HDD:-

1. Connect the archos to the PC using the USB cable (the unit will start but will need to be shut down again by pressing the power button)
2. Press the power button and the 'lock' button together for a few seconds and you should get a basic recovery screen
3. Scroll down to repair disk and select
4. Click on done and wait for a few seconds and you will see the archos as a drive in 'My Computer' (Note that this does take a few minutes)
5. You now need to back up your data, movies, music, widgets etc as the next step is to format the Archos HDD which will wipe it all.
6. Disconnect the Archos, turn it off and then turn it back on again by pressing the power and 'lock' buttons together.
7. Scroll down to format disk and select. The Archos will now delete all files on the HDD and you will get a message asking to connect to a PC and install the update file. This is the firmware file that can be obtained from the Archos website. You'll also notice that the recovery code has changed from 101 to 108
8. Connect the Archos to the PC, wait for a few seconds and you will see the archos as a drive in 'My Computer' again.
9. Drag the firmware update file from your PC where you've downloaded it to directly on to the root drive
10. Click 'done' on the Archos and it will begin to update the operating system.
11. Once this is complete then there should be an update successful message, select done and the archos should restart giving you the nice bubble screen and asking if you want to enable USB.
12. Note that the Archos is now in a 'factory built' condition so you'll need to adjust settings etc according to your preferences.
13. You can now start the long process of transferring your files back to the Archos.

Just got Archos 5 goes into error 101...

Hi there, these instructions are for the archos 705 but they are the same for the 605.

A) Download the firmware from Archos and save it to your desktop (Make sure the file name on the desktop hasn't changed from the original download file name)

B) The Archos 705:
1- Connect the unit to its power source.
2- Start the unit in recovery mode: Press the TV button first then the power on/off and keep pressing TV button (do not release it)
3- The recovery mode will start (the screen that asks for repair or format etc…)
4- Select "Repair" by scrolling up and down with the TV Button (it is all explained to move through the menu at the top of the Archos screen) (Do not press "Format" at any time)
5- Now that you are on "Repair" select it to validate your selection
6- The unit will go to "Plug the unit etc…" plug it with the USB cable to the computer
8- Wait until Pc should recognizes your Archos (around 5 seconds)

C) Computer
1- From your computer select the firmware file you downloaded from the net and put it in your Archos (in the root folder, nowhere else, where it has the folders, music, videos, pictures etc… as a file)

D) On the Archos 705:
1- Select "Ok" on the Archos (on & off button) shortly to select and confirm the file is now on the Archos
2- you are done! The Archos 705 should now read through the file you have transferred and repair the system
3- DO NOT DISCONNECT the power cable until the process is finished
4- When done safely disconnect (as you usually do, for Mac trash the letter of the Archos to the bin or for PC's: right click the green icon bottom right of the screen for xp & vista)
5- Press on/off button to reboot

Your unit should restart with a fresh repaired, updated system like day one.
Good luck!

My archos 5 wont switch on to the home page

You should perform this when it is on
problem solve #1
* Press the reset button on the buttom of the device using a papr clip. It should shut it off. then try to turn it on again.

try the next if the problem still exist.

Problem solve 2

* Download the latest frimware from Archos.com on to the desktop on your computer ( i recommend desktop because it will be easy to find) Then plug the device to a pc Using USB cable. turn the archos on by holding power switch and TV/LCD buttons at the same time until a white screen comes up. it should ask for Usb. if it does pick the ubs. if it does not give you a USB option but these "NO", "REPAIRE", "FORMAT" move the curser to repaire. do not pick the format which will delete all the contents and plugins you have on your device.

after repaire completes it should say done. do not press the done wait until you see the archos connection under My computer. it should normaly come up with name 504 or you will be able to see the archos icon. place the firmware in to the main drirector not under any folder. then press the ok button to confirm the "done" device will power off and start with a white screen again but this time it will update the firmware and restart do not unplug the Usb cable until the update completes. It should restart again and load the normal user interface. Your device should be fine and back to normal.
