I have a Toro 42 zero turn mower and the blades stop turning while mowing. The PTO switch knob melted. I replaced the PTO switch and the blades turned for 5 min. and then the PTO switch melted again.

Elertric blade drive clutches are a real pain when they go wrong
It sounds like a electrical short is causing the wires inside the switch to heat up beyond the safe melting point thereafter five mins the circuit gets between the fault gets broken as the switch fails the blades stop and the switch melts a bad eaRth corroded may cause this check the deck safety switches are not exposed e.g. they been damaged and the decks metal is shorting them out
a wire has been stripped of protective covering and is touching some metal shorting out something that vital to the blade controls operation the switch is getting a overload and subsequently melting your might need an lawnmower engineer to diagnose to the fault fully and repair

My pto is on all the time on my Toro zero turn. Blades are engaged when I start the engine even though the switch is in the off position? What would cause this?

Haven't had your particular problem, but my my blades would not turn when I pulled the PTO control knob. Turned out to be a bad PTO switch. Mechanic replaced the switch and it worked fine thereafter.

I was mowing and the blades stopped turning. I disengaged and re-engaged the blades a few times and they started back. Then a few minutes later the blades stopped again then the motor stopped and will...

I have no idea what type or model of mower you have but if I was to guess I would say it has an electric pto clutch on it, if so remove your pto belt and clutch. I would bet it is burned out and locked up preventing your motor from turning over. Once the clutch is removed I will bet it will start and run fine. This is not a cheap fix but relatively easy one. Hope this helps.

Craftsman zero turn - blades won't engage

The PTO switch contacts to operate the clutch that starts the blades is defective. I have replaced mine and the new one just failed again. Sears must know this is a defect problem but so far they are quiet about the problem
