I have tried cleaning and drying the contacts, but nothing changes. The message stays the same. I recently took apart the entire brew unit and cleaned it. I have also run the descaling cycle and the brew unit cleaning cycle. It was at the end of the brew unit cleaning cycle that I got the error message.
I had the same issue with the empty drip tray message not going away. At first I was reluctant to remove the machine and open the back, but it is pretty easy to do. Once you remove the back panel you can see the contacts. My contacts were covered with coffee grinds and moisture. I did a thorough cleaning and dried them off. I put the machine back together and then restarted. Everything worked like a charm. I think when the contacts were wet with debris, they weren't able to discern if the drip tray was in contact or not. Thank you for the suggestion to open and clean. Saved a service charge. Also allowed me to get a better idea of how the machine is put together.
I have never had seen this problem ... however assuming the tray contacts are not shorted in any way ... its likely to be a problem with contacts in rear of the tray cavity. I would check the following;
1. Remove drip tray and shine a torch into the tray cavity to inspect the receiving contacts that accept the tray contacts. Perhaps theses contacts are shorted in some way.
2. The next step is to open up machine, but you need to be suitably experienced with electrical appliances to perform this step. Disconnect the power at the outlet (or if this is not accessible than at the fuse box). Remove the machine from the cavity and remove the rear panels (making note of which screws go where). Locate the wires that terminate on the contacts on the rear side of tray cavity. Disconnect the wires from these contacts. Replace panels and then reapply power to unit. If this solves your problem .. then there must be a short on the contacts in rear of tray cavity. If this does not solve the problem then trace this wire back to control board and remove wire at the control board. Again replace panels. If this solves problem then there must be a fault in the wire which can be fixed/replaced.. If this does not solve the problem then it would appear to be a problem with control board and best to call Miele.
Please come back if you need more help and also once you solve the problem .. to explain what went wrong. regards
Tried all the above advice to no avail but then found a simple solution - rather than fully inserting the drip tray I pulled it back by a few mm. This seemed to help the contacts engage, and I could proceed with the descaling procedure.
Mine was giving me "empty drip pan " after descaling. I tried everyone's solution from this web page and other web pages. Number one, if you take unit out, you can take back panel off-you still can't get to connectors from the back side. Basically the back of connectors. Anyways what fixed it for me was getting a hair dryer and drying connectors from back side of machine and using q tips to dry/clean connectors. Bottom line is if connectors are wet-then error won't remove.
Hello, so I recently had the same problem the "empty drip tray" message would not change regardless of what I did. I cleaned the contacts and still nothing so I dried the pooled water that remained after pulling the tray then I left the door open and the unit on. After several hours the message changed to "insert drip tray". I did and it finished the cleaning cycle and worked perfectly after. I'm pretty handy so I wouldn't mind working on it myself however I don't know what part would cause the water leakage so I don't know what to replace
Thanks for great advice. This problem of being stuck on ‘empty the drip tray’ has now happened to me 3 times with 2 different Miele machines.
Twice at end descaling programme and this time at end clean brew unit programme.
First time it got better after a while itself. Presumably dried out. Second time had to pay for a Miele visit. This time pulled machine out unplugged it and took 2 back plates off. Took 5 minutes only.
The contacts for drip tray are very obvious at bottom left. They were covered in coffee grounds. Ten minutes for a fiddly clean then it worked fine.
I guess it’s a slight design fault but wouldn’t be without my machine. Is easy to fix.
Make sure that you don't put the front part of the drip tray assembly into the dishwasher. The heat of the drying cycle will cause the plastic to warp. That may result in the contract pin on the assembly to no longer make contact with the toggle switch. I learned the hard way. I fixed it by putting a thin piece of plastic between the pin plate and the outer assembly wall.
I had this problem too and was able to fix it thanks to other people's answers. What I did was open the side of the machine to take out the brew unit. That way I could easily see the contacts for the drip tray in the back. Some water had pooled in that area so I cleaned that up and was able to finish the descaling cycle.

Thank you. I was able to solve the problem by blowing hot air from a blow drying toward the contacts inside the machine.
I have the same issue. The blow dryer didn’t help
