When you turn the TV on, everything is normal for about one second. Then the image goes away. The sound continues normally. If you get really close to the TV, like a few inches away, you can sometimes see a picture moving or make out words (we had it on the news). So it is effectively so dark you can't see it, but it is still there. This TV was recently given to us. It was working great in its previous location. It had to be taken down there, brought to our house, and be put up.
This is what happens when the backlighting circuit fails. It can either be the lamp or the inverter board. This is one reason the newer TVs/Monitors are using LED backlighting. They last longer. Typical LCD backlighting can fail in as little as three years if they are left on full time.
