The following reply/solution was given by omega_f to my problem a while ago.
''Connect with an ethernet cable then type http://192.168.1.1 into a web browser and see what happens. If you get a log in screen leave the username blank and use the password 'admin' (without the quotes). this will tell you if the router is accessable to the computer. ''
Please clarify: What do I connect with an ethernet cable? Is it the router to the ethernet cable, then to connect the router by another cable (the blue one) to the PC? Or is it PC to ethernet cable which is what I am connected to now - when I typed http://192.168.1.1 into the URL address, this has not resulted to anything except the message ''This Page Cannot Be Displayed.''
Thank you.
I assume your modem is capable of a 100 Mbps connection with your ISP and you are suing Cat5e plenum Ethernet cable.
Try this:
- Unplug power to modem.
- Unplug router from modem if using one.
- Connect a single PC or laptop with at least a 100 Mbps network adapter directly to modem via CAT5 or better Ethernet cable.
- Plug in the modem power and wait for a Internet connection indicator.
- Reboot computer.
- Test Internet speed to multiple locations.
Ethernet cable means CAT5 or UTP for others or LAN cable. The connection should be LAN port of your computer to LAN1 of your router.
And you can connect also the internet cable usually ethernet cable from your internet provider directly to (ethernet cable)WAN port of your router to get signal from your internet provider.
Also if you get this message, this could also means you still don't set up or configure the router's settings to communicate when your LAN and router. They must see each other to access the router's utility webpage.

SOURCE: trying to install d-link
try user: admin and password: admin.
Assuming you are installing fresh, if it doesnt take admin admin.
Try resetting the device. Follow instructions to reset the Dlink router
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/wbr2310/Manual/wbr2310_manual_10.zip
A pin hole with Reset written over it, near to power socket.
After resettings any previous password will be reset to default
user: admin, password: nothing just hit enter
Hope this helps
SOURCE: set up router/modem as instructed
Problem can't be solved as described, a fixer would need more details.
What kind of modem/router is it?
What instructions are you working from so far (you say, "as instructed" so I take it you're looking at a Quick Start Guide of some sort?)
How are you connected to it?
What http address are you going to (E.g. some routers use 192.168.1.1, others 192.168.1.254 or various alternatives)
What happens when you enter that address on a browser?
Have you set your computer's address to a nearby address so it can talk to the route?
If I had one guess with not enough information, I'd say you need to set your PC to an address one different from the target you're going to.
