usually if the pins are pulled out that is the freewheel position. push them in to drive. if the trans locks in drive and it is hard to push it should be ready to mow. unless the drive belt is stretched or broken or a linkage is out of adjustment or broken.
You should be able to push it forwards as well as backwards. I had a similar problem (engine stalling) with mine. I found out if I half choke it, it will stay running. Transmission may still have a problem.
The transmission is shot. A common problem. Mine died after 3 years and 200 hours of use. Estimate to fix was almost $2000. I scapped it and bought a better mower. There was a rtransmission design defect in the RZT series.
