How do I disable the touchpad? I am running Vista Home Premium. There is no Function key to enable/disable the touchpad. I disabled the touchpad by going to Control Panel, Mouse, and disabling the touchpad device. But after I restarted the PC, the touchpad was enabled and the touchpad doesn't show up as a device when I use Control Panel. In Mouse Properties, the only two items are PS/2 Compatible Mouse and HID-compliant mouse.

Have u gone to control panel - device manager - then on pull down menu's show hidden devices ; click on all the + boxes till you see touchpad ( mouse and pointing devices) right click mouse and click on disable.

i always go through device manager as all devices are in one place!!

ps/2 mouse is the one touchpad uses, right click on it and disable it. or you could install your laptops touchpad driver (often called synaptic) then when u go into device manager you will see it and then disable it!

Are you certain that the touchpad wasn't disabled accidentally from the Fn key? There are secondary features assigned to each of the Function (F1-F12) keys, usually in BLUE. On of them is to disable/enable the touchpad (toggle-type function, do it one time to disable, the next to enable). You press and hold the "Fn" key (next to the Windows key at bottom let of keyboard, then press the associated Function Key.

Touchpad not active

Locate the "Fn" key in the lower right or left corner of the laptop keyboard.

The "Fn" key typically has different colored text on it or the key itself is a different color.

Locate the function (F1 through F12) key at the top of the keyboard that disables or enables the touchpad on the laptop.

The key typically has an icon that resembles a touchpad with a finger touching it or a touchpad with a diagonal line through it.

Press both the "Fn" and touchpad Function key simultaneously to reactive the touchpad on your laptop.

Move your finger along the touchpad to verify that it works.

Press the combination at any time to disable the touchpad again.

hope this helps
