What you need to know is there enough fuel going to the regulator. It should be 7 to 11 inches Water Column. If not your problem may be not enough fuel. That includes when the heater in your house kicks on and what ever gas appliance you may have. Once you verify that you need to figure out if you have the proper pressure coming out of the regular on the inside of the generator. Next I would look at compression of the cylinders. It may need new piston rings.

The first thing I would do is to clean and dry air filter. If it is a foam material you can use a warm water and a few drops of dish soap.Rinse thoroughly and let dry. I also would try a small amount of octane booster in my gas. Hope this helps you.

If you had a power outage, or fluctuation during your test the generator may have transferred during the test, and not have timed out during the expected 20 minutes of run time, as if it had transferred it went out of test mode, and began providing power to your home. If that were the case, the situation that you described could happen.
