Connected HDMI to VGA on laptop. Set to 1024 x 768 and the system says not connected. I've tried all HDMI ports on the tv. Very frustrating.

Using a VGA splitter to connect a laptop to a Devant TV can work, but it's important to note a few things:
1. **VGA Splitter Compatibility:** Ensure that the VGA splitter you're using supports the resolution and frequency of both your laptop and the Devant TV. Some cheaper splitters might not support higher resolutions, resulting in a lower quality display.
2. **Connection Setup:** Connect the VGA output from your laptop to the input of the VGA splitter. Then connect the two outputs of the splitter to the VGA inputs on the Devant TV.
3. **Settings on Laptop:** On your Mac, go to System Preferences > Displays. Ensure that the display settings are configured to extend or mirror the display to the external monitor (TV). You might need to detect displays or choose the appropriate resolution settings here.
4. **TV Input Source:** On your Devant TV, select the correct input source where you've connected the VGA cable.

On most TVs, the PC input is the VGA port. Try setting the TV input to HDMI, assuming an HDMI to HDMI cable is in use. You may need to turn off both the TV and the laptop. Then turn on the TV before turning on the laptop. After the laptop is running, you may need to adjust the display settings to send the data to the TV. (For energy conservation, the laptop may not send data to external ports.) On most versions of Windows, you can find a quick Display Settings link by right clicking on the desktop somewhere without icons or running programs. Connecting laptop VGA port to HDMI port on a TV
VGA to HDMI converter is required to connect a laptop to a TV with HDMI input. The VGA signal does not have an audio component. You need to connect an audio cable from the audio/headphone port on your laptop to the audio connector on your TV. There are HDMI converters with Audio input so you do not need to connect an audio cable to the TV. did you change the input on your TV ?

Try lowering screen resolution on TV. There is a chance your video card can't handle HD like 1080 dpi or higher. Plus make sure TV input is set to VGA.

Most TVs will have HDMI and RCA component and composite jacks. Some TVs will also have a VGA port. Your laptop will have a VGA port. (If the laptop is fairly new, it may also have an HDMI port.)

Not all TVs will support an HDMI signal from a computer, so the VGA signal is often better. However, that limits you to SD (anything with HDCP will fail.)

Very few TVs ship with the HDMI or component cables. However, there are some vendors who do package the HDMI cable with their TV. Without knowing which exact model of TV and laptop, I can only make a few suggestions. I know that the TCP42ST30 (Plasma 42") doesn't have a VGA port.

Look at your laptop for any external monitor port. VGA ports are generally blue female ports with 15 holes (D-Sub). If your TV has a matching VGA port, get a standard VGA monitor cable.

If you have the VGA port on the laptop but not on the TV, you can try a converting from VGA to HDMI. (You may need a DVI to VGA adapter and either a DVI to HDMI cable or a DVI to HDMI adapter.) Note: this gives an analog signal (RGB format) to the TV. You'll also need to make sure that your VGA port is active (in the BIOS for some computers) and then set your computer to send the signal to the external monitor. It is best to turn off both the computer and the TV before connecting the two. Then turn on the TV and set it to the correct input before turning on the computer. (In Windows 7, I set the video signal for the external monitor by right clicking on the desktop and selecting Graphics Properties. Set the signal to the external monitor and click Apply. Then click OK (in the external monitor's screen).)

Some laptops come with an HDMI, mini-HDMI or a DisplayPort option. For the latter two, you will need the appropriate cable with that end and the HDMI connector on the other. Then connect the TV and the computer as described above. (Note: my TVs accept a computer signal at the HDMI port labeled HDMI/DVI. However, you need to make sure that your TV understands this signal. It isn't the same format as that from a set-top box. My laptop has VGA and HDMI out; the desktops have VGA, DVI and HDMI (on one).)

Which operating system? I know in XP I've had to set up a dual monitor screen before the OS will broadcast to the VGA/HDMI port.

I dont believe that laptop has an HDMI port on it. If you have an LCD TV then your TV may have a VGA or DVI input on it. You can connect your laptop to the TV by using a VGA to VGA or VGA to DVI cable. If you your TV doesn't have one of these input ports, then you're not going to get your laptop connected to your TV.

You just need a HDMI cable to go from the laptop to the TV. It is refered to as a patch cable. You then go into the TV menu and set it to component or in some cases it will say computer. The VGA on the TV just allows both style interfaces to be connected.

First of all your TV should support both HDMI and VGA.
If it does lets start with HDMI as you will get audio through the HDMI cable.
Connect the HDMI cable to the TV and set the source on the TV to HDMI using your remote control, connect the other end to the laptop, hold down Fn and hit F5 to toggle between screens.
