Well all of the above advice is good/great, but you have not said what type of garage door you have. if the springs are on the side of the garage door, they are not very hard to replace and not all that dangerous. if the spring or springs are over the top of the garage door, then you do know what you are d oing and people have been maimed. so what type of garage door do you have. you can always post a photo. lots of good knowledge on this site.
I also think you'd be better off hiring a professional. Spring replacement is extremely risky and if you don't know what you're doing you could end up doing more damage than good.
