When start /stop button pressed platter just move's backwards and forwards about 5mm ..if I then press the stop/start button twice again it will start to move but with a really slow pick up... pitch works ok and no flickering lights... when I stop the platter again after it's been turning it's if I have turned the on/off switch off .....PLEASE HELP.....
SOURCE: platter problem
THE PITCH slider or the variable resistor could have gone faulty. A new pitch is only $25 i think. They may need to salvage the pcb from your old one as technics no longer manufacters them. I've never seen the pitch led stay on lock when the actual pitch is not at zero. Hopefully the pitch did not short out the brake or the variable resistors on the motor's circuitboard.
keep me poted.

One of the drive circuits on the main board are faulty, and will need to be replaced. This is not an easy fix, so you will need to take it to a qualified service center for service and repair. Not an expensive fix, but a little time consuming in isolating the issue.

did you ever open the turntable. It sounds like the on/off switch is bad. Remove the platter and screws with a phillips screw driver and just make sure the connections are in place. make sure you disconnect the power first. let me know what happens afterwards.

The chances are the rubber drive belt has either broken or stretched so that it has fallen off the drive pulleys.
You will need to gain access to the underside of the turntable to replace it.
With most turntables the process will be to secure the tone arm (a rubber band will do the trick) before turning the whole thing upside down and unscrewing the base.
Replacement drive belts are easily available on the internet. Search by make and model number of your turntable
