There is a Micro switch that is activated when an important is not in place or not in place correctly as needed.
The specific part should have a small extension tab or lug that will push the arm on the micro switch.
In some cases the micro switch can be manually activated by using a folded paper or such plug.
This safety step is meant to prevent any spilled mess without the part.
I cannot suggest specific step without knowing the make and model of the machine or what is triggering this error message.

Check that the pin on the drawer cover is not broken.This pin will activate the micro switch that tells drawer is in place.

Open the door on the right. The brew unit is the thing with the handle that has the "press" on it. You need to push on the upper left side of the brew unit until it clicks. There is an outlet spout on the opposite side of where you are pushing. It goes into an intake port that needs to be lubed(food gade only), so the outlet spout will slide in without pushing back. That should take care of the missing brew unit.

Too much coffee comes up when the load on the bottom chamber is too much.
Generally, it means you have too much coffee in the lower chamber.
If so, adjust the grinding times in the program.
Alternatively, if this happens with no coffee in the chamber, it may be the top piston is sticking on the lip of the bottom chamber as it moves.
You can try making coffee with the front door open(obviously pulling the front door switch so the machine works..:) and see what happens.

the thing that dropped out was part of the micro switch for the dregs draw. Yes you can use the machine with the piece that you put in there, at some time you might consider just replacing the micro switch.
